Everything in Slow Motion is so good. I prefer the guy's previous project Hands but everything he does is great

I miss Hands! Their first album was so good when I stumbled on it. Need to find that again, it's not on my streaming platform of choice sadly.

  6. Hey this is great! Reminded me of Ben Gibbard/DCFC a bit. I'll be excited to check out the record!

Thanks for the kind words! This is probably the most Death Cab-y song, but you'll probably find a bit of Ben Gibbard all over the record. Hope you enjoy it when it comes out!

    The rivalry is back on

i really enjoy Colony House, which kinda teeters the line between being overtly Christian and just kind of uplifting and sits in the same greater mainstream alt-pop scene as the 1975. Mutemath and Paper Route fit in this general sound space as well and I love both

you already said Relient K, but the thing that I can’t shake when I listen to Origami Angel is that they sound sonically so much like if early Relient K were more irreverent

and then you have the Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and TORRES-like musicians that fit really nicely into current indie scene, and while not Christian music per se, write a lot about grappling with faith issues, growing up in the church, etc and I think that’s a good way to wrestle with faith via music too without it explicitly being worship music

Also, and I don’t think it’s been said yet, I don’t think it’s *bad* if Christian music doesn’t always scratch the same itch as more secular music. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect something like the Philadelphia punk/DIY/90s revival scene to be a breeding ground for a bunch of Christian music with similar musical influences and that’s fine to like that music sound a lot but not have the Christian analog to it

Really good point that there doesn't have to be a Christian version or analog to the stuff I like (especially the 90s alternative sounding stuff). It does seem that Christian musicians are REALLY into the folk/singer-songwriter thing, though. I just kind of wish more Christian bands were experimental beyond being really heavy or really folky. Makes me thankful for bands like Kings K at least.

Last one I’ll post but this one has some Anberlin/Valleyheart/War on Drugs influence so I feel like folks here would especially dig it.

    there is one way out

My in-laws bought my wife and I Newsboys tickets for our birthdays. It’s probably been 15+ years since I last heard a Newsboys song. What should I be expecting?

also, anyone know who is opening on their current tour? The ticketing site doesn’t have anyone listed.

Not sure if this has been posted/shared yet, but just found/started listening to this podcast called “Our Pod Is An Awesome Pod” with 2 guys that grew up in the church and they go back and listen to records anywhere from the 90’s to 2000’s mixing in CCM stuff with Tooth and Nail anything alternative and discuss whether the records hold up musically, lyrically, and discussing how they impacted the Christian music scene at large.

First episode they did was DC Talk - Jesus Freak. Growing up in a Christian home/listening to Christian radio I had forgotten a lot of these songs/didn’t realize I had actually heard all that record growing up lol

That looks like a podcast I need to check out, I definitely grew up in the spot right between CCM and T&N

DC Talk will always hold a special place for me since they were the first band I truly loved and listened to everything they put out

OMG. The description of the MMHMM one: "Are they singing about Jesus or their girlfriend?" That was such an insufferable debate when it came out. I need to check this out.

relistened to Satellite not too long ago and it was still just as good as it was in middle school. the title track is low key one of their best.

    thank u, next Supporter

I don’t think it’s possible for someone to truly be into dc Talk without the formative experience of hearing them as a Christian kid (particularly in the 90s, though maybe a Christian kid with a 90s parent can have a similar enough experience). I had a phase where I tried to get people who missed that experience to appreciate them, but it only goes so far. As much as they’re, at their best, the perfection of CCM, they’re also too steeped in that flavor to transcend it.

That being said, if @awakeohsleeper or anyone else feels curious enough about this thing, I think “In the Light,” “Consume Me,” and “The Hardway” are good entry points (without hitting too much youth group energy; if you’re alright with corny anthems, obviously listen to “Jesus Freak”).

Yes! The songwriting is on another level, even though it's ever-so-slightly off-center of my musical preferences. Big fan of this album though, the back-half is especially good.

    heaven knows what i am

The crazy thing is that DC Talk became a foundational pillar of CCM history in what was really only a two-album run. They followed up perhaps the most successful CCM album of all time with a wild curveball (but my favorite) in Supernatural and then bowed out of the game... Sure, they all tried the solo route, but they could have reunited at any time and just printed money.

As for someone visiting DC Talk for the first time, I almost think My Friend (So Long) is the best starting place, as it oscillates wildly between various 90s genres, embodies the never-take-ourselves-too-seriously attitude of DC talk, and will ear-worm its way into your head:
