So @JRGComedy recommended me Astoria by Marianas Trench. I've heard of the band, definitely seen the name dropped a couple of times, but never listened to a single song. Didn't even know what kind of music they played. I downloaded the album to my phone and upon looking at the album art I was like... "the fuck? are they pirates or some shit?" Upon learning they were Canadian I asked my Canadian friend about them cause... that makes sense in my head? She said they sucked and that everyone in high school was obsessed with them but they suck. So with that in mind I hit play and delved into the album. Now this record by no means, sucks, nor does the band. But I can see why my Canadian friend thinks so. She seems to not be fond of music with pop sensibilities, and this is a pop record from a pop band. Now I find that pop played by a traditional band (guitar, bass, keys, drums) can fall into the realm of corny. But this record does not. Maybe cheesy a bit cheesy at times with a song like "Yesterday" that reminds me of "Footloose" and "This Means War" which sounds similar to Rascal Flatt's "Life is a Highway," but ya know what? The latter songs referenced are bops, so I'm perfectly okay with that. Josh Ramsay is an excellent vocalist, the band are talented musicians, and most importantly they know how to craft strong pop songs that work well in a loose concept album like Astoria
Hey @skurt , @Fuck You Aurora is back on track and wants back in. He’s gonna write up @Larry David review and then you wanna trade with him this week?
@Fuck You Aurora and myself are trading 1 album each this week. ME: Mastodon-Emperor of Sand Aurora: Thomas Giles-Modern Noise
@Larry David finally here is my review for Home, Like NoPlace Is There. Overtime I've heard a lot about The Hotelier, and a lot of good things to be exact. I've never gotten around to them up until now. Upon listening to this album I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I was expecting a banger to be honest, The first track " An Introduction To The Album " just didn't set the tone for me, I feel like a solid opener is very, very important. The opening track just didn't catch my attention, I was just waiting and waiting for something big to happen and it just left me hanging. A couple of things about this album really bugged me, the vocals being one, I think it's in main part because that style is just so over done and I feel like every song sounded the same. But I will say Life In Drag is a pretty sweet song. I have mad respect for these guys and what they do. It just didn't connect with me like I thought it would. Thank you for the rec ! Much love my man ! Also, sorry how shitty this review came out, I'm sure I'll get better as time goes.
I regret to announce after this week @LuigiPeppercorn will be departing from our ranks. Life can get busy, it’s totally understandable. The door is not locked though, and I have let it be known he can come back whenever he wants.
It feels like everything has been said about this album at this point, which is currently my album of the decade, but I can't really get behind the "feel like every song sounded the same." One of my favorite things about this album is the way it flawlessly jumps between pop-punk (In Framing), post hardcore (Life in Drag, Among the Wildflowers), vintage emo (Dendron—that bridge!), and so on. I'd also recommend reading along with the lyrics if you give it another spin, the songwriting is pretty otherworldly.
@Contender responded to my first message but vanished after my reccs and before I could get theirs. Didn’t think my picks were that bad :/
I look at the thread whenever there's a new post and for some reason just now it dawned on me like oh hey I need to listen to recs soon cause this thread has a purpose!!!
