Seeing as this threads been bumped today I might as rec this awesome new album in here. They’re an awesome British rock band that remind me of a heavier Thrice.
First impressions for today so far: Twenty One Pilots - I was hopeful after seeing that Paul Meany was involved, but the style they do just doesn't click with me. I'll probably try it again but I didn't care for it much at all on first listen. You Me At Six - A couple cool jams on here. I thought their last album had some really catchy stuff on it so I'll spend some more time with this to see how it settles in. LANY - Four songs in and it sounds like a natural evolution from the first album (which I loved). Similar feel, but a little bit more going on musically and a little more volume/energy. Will definitely be listening more.
I will also highly recommend the new mewithoutyou and Coheed And Cambria albums. Stellar albums from both bands
So excited to check out that Black Peaks album @ugman_2000! I’m so jealous of your show tonight and I expect pics on here, especially considering the location! That’s unfortunate you didn’t like 21 Pilots @Patterns in Traffic but everything is not for everyone right?! I think it’s such a great and natural progression from Blurryface.
So I’ve been thinking of turning this into a new release discussion club. Beginning of the week: Everyone talks about which new releases they’re gonna listen to Friday, and round table discussions of what they heard last week (liked and didn’t like, not reviews just thoughts and discussions. End of week: first impressions of the new listens, RIYL, etc. The thought behind this is to share albums you hear on release (kinda like what happened a few posts up) and who knows maybe someone will like what you say. Also allows everyone to talk and chat about the new releases. Thoughts?
This is what I wanted to suggest as well. Like many others, life got in the way so I couldn't stay active. I'm glad that I've been able to witness it, even it was for a short period. I'll go back to the reviews I owe for sure, and would be happy to use this thread as a "here's what band/album I discovered this week and would like to recommend" thing if it's okay.
Yeah I like this idea. I’ve heard a few amesome albums in the last few weeks which would’ve been cool to try and get some of you all into.
The Black Queen - Live at the Bristol Thekla (05/10/18) So last Friday I saw The Black Queen live in Bristol here in the UK. For those unaware of this band it was the side project (but now main band) of Greg Puciato from The Dillinger Escape Plan but this bands sound is nowhere near similar to DEP. The rest of the band are made up of 2 ex-members from NIN, Puscifer and other bands, so a good pedigree. The Black Queen play electronic synth wave sort of music, I’d best describe them as a modern sound Depeche Mode. The setting for this gig was quite unique for me as it was inside of this boat. The industrial aesthetic of which I thought was quite fitting for the type of band I was seeing. So me and my mate got to Bristol nice and early as we had to travel a couple of hours for this gig. Which gave us plenty of time to get slightly inebriated beforehand. I think this helped with me being able to have lots of fun at this gig as this isn’t a genre I’ve particularly seen live much and it meant I could dance and get involved a lot more comfortably. The gig itself was amazing, the venue was the perfect setting for this and real intimate. We missed the first support band but managed to catch the whole set of the main support. They were called Tennis System and I thought they were pretty cool and I’m definitely going to check them out this week on Spotify. They reminded me a little of Turnover but with a more fuzzy low-fi sound to them. My main take away was that they had some really cool guitar sounds going on. Right onto the main event, they came out and opened with the first two proper tracks from their 2nd album (that only came out the other week). These sounded great live and it was cool to see the crowd loving these new songs already. They then went into one of their bigger songs from their debut in Ice To Never, it was at this point where I was just floored with how incredible Greg’s vocals are and what a show this would be. He has such range and his control of his vocals is just insane. Like I knew he was a great vocalist from seeing him in Dillinger but you’d only get glimpses of how good his melodic singing is in their music. This, this was just a whole new level of skill, honesty I had goosebumps. While the other guys didn’t quite have the overpowering stage presence of Greg, they were both great and you can certainly see how well they’ve honed they craft over the years as touring musicians in some excellent bands. The rest of the set was made up from their excellent debut album Fever Daydream (they played it all bar 1 song). It was so great to finally hear these songs live after living with (and loving) this album for a few years now. It was all incredible but particular highlights were Secret Scream for how fun it was and Maybe We Should for Greg’s incredible vocals again. The band closed out on Apocalypse Morning, which was so impressive to watch live as they added an additional guitar for this which gave the song more layers than on the album. This added a lot more aggression to the very NIN like somber closer. Anyways this gig was incredible and is one of the best gigs I’ve done in a long while. Here’s a couple of pics and a video of the gig. I’d also recommend checking out this band if you like electronic music with big choruses. I’d say start with their debut Fever Daydream and then work your way into the new one.
Awesome, Yeah the new albums really good, the last two tracks in particular I think are incredible. It’s already jumped into my top 10 aoty. I only recommended the debut as it’s a bit more immediate for people starting with the band.
You know you and I both agree on how incredible the album is and like you it sits in my top 10 for the year as well.
