Not something I would usually listen to but I looked them up and the track Cinnamon came up and that was pretty good. I liked the voice and quiet guitar, although I found the electronic snares actually a little distracting. Not sure why, I just wasn't keen on the production of them. The song was very enjoyable though, a really nice melody in the chorus. Not sure what he is singing but it's something like "It's a slow cinnamon summer, your spell is pulling me under", and I really liked the lyrics generally. Also listened to Snow and that was good too, a different vibe entirely but I enjoyed the production a lot more. I also really like the lyrics in this song, although it's much sadder. Think I'll put them on my list and check out the album at some point!
I'm also stoked to hear the new Dirty Nil album too, when I get round to it. Their last 2 albums showed real promise and they're so great live, I just hope they can transfer that into the new one.
Hey everybody! Next week (9/17 - 9/23) we'll be back to our regularly scheduled CMCS pairings. I would like to post the pairings on Saturday night to give people a bit of time to figure out their album trade(s) prior to the 17th. Lately it has been a bit difficult to tell whether someone is IN or BENCHED, so I'm asking anyone who wants IN for the next session to please let me know prior to Saturday night. If I don't hear from you, I'll take that as you wanting to sit for the upcoming session. I'm going to tag everyone who has been active in here the past couple of weeks. If you're not tagged but would like to rejoin (or join), please let me know! Anyone is welcome :) @anonimito @Nate_Johnson @ugman_2000 @Patterns in Traffic @edisnfg @GBlades @SamLevi11 @xapplexpiex @Kiana @figureitout @marioeatworld @Jim Morgan @Anarchivist @summertimejesus
I'm glad you enjoyed what you heard! I agree the production might not be for everyone, but those melodies really are great. "Snow" is one of my favorites!
Awesome! So far I have @SamLevi11 @ugman_2000 @anonimito @Patterns in Traffic @Nate_Johnson and @xapplexpiex as IN (in addition to myself)
Finally got a chance to play this just now. I can confirm that Sam is right, this album does indeed rule. Also that Hit The Lights cover If anyone else in here hasn’t heard this band before and you love punk rock with ridiculous amount of rock and roll swagger check it out.
Upcoming CMCS Pairings (9/17 - 9/23) @xapplexpiex // @SamLevi11 @anonimito // @ugman_2000 @Patterns in Traffic // @Nate_Johnson Very low numbers, obviously, but these were the only people who responded that they wanted in.

We Came As Romans - Understanding What We've Grown To Be (2011) So the other week @Nate_Johnson gave me this album to review. Before I start this review I just thought I best mention that unfortunately part of the reason WCAR were fresh in the minds of Nate and myself when he rec'd this to me was because of the tragic passing of their clean vocalist Kyle Pavone about 3 weeks ago to an accidental overdose. Obviously this goes without saying that to lose anyone is extremely sad, especially in an unexpected way like this. The band have set up the following foundation in the name of Kyle and there's a link to donate if you feel so inclined The Kyle Pavone Foundation from what I can see this is being setup as a place for musicians to reach out to if they're struggling with addiction. Along with that here's a link to a UK site for help with addiction FRANK (If anyone knows of a US based site, let me know and I'll add it to this post). For those unfamiliar with WCAR they are a metalcore band that formed in the 00's. I'd heard of WCAR before and actually saw them once at Warped tour in the UK back in 2013. I'd never really delved into their discog though as I wasn't really listening to this genre much around the time they got big. I'd mostly checked out of that scene around the time a lot of the Rise bands started getting big in the late 00's. I was however a big fan of metalcore in the late 90's early 00's so I did have a fair understanding of what I was getting into with this. So onto the actual album, as expected it tends to follow the metalcore formula of that time. It's got lots of chugging techy styled guitars and heavy vocals in the verses, then clean vocals and a more post-hardcore sound musically in the choruses. There's also some synths scattered sporadically throughout the album which bring another texture to their sound. Both vocalists hold their own throughout this album, David Stephens has a good scream on him and competently shouts all the verses. It's however Kyle Pavone who I feel really shines through on this with his melodic vocals soaring to elevate most of these tracks to something more than your run of the mill metalcore. His style kind of reminds me a little of JT from Hawthorne Heights, just with a little more bite behind it. Lyrically the songs on the album mostly purvey a positive, uplifting message about battling through tough times and taking a new, more positive view on life. The title track for example talks about feeling empty and down and managing to get through this to feeling alive in the moment. Another example of this is in the chorus of What I Wished I Never Had where it focuses on trying to better oneself "I need to rid myself of resentment And every last bit of it If I'm going to live up to the things I've written I need to clear my mind of this anger And all the rage that I've held near If I'm going to live up to the words I've spoken" Overall I enjoyed this album a lot more than I was expecting, musically it's good, they blend that heavy/mellow aesthetic well together. Mostly though I really enjoyed the fact that it's got a good message behind the lyrics. After having to spend time with this album and noticing how much I enjoyed it has made me think that maybe I judged this genre around the 2010's too harshly and that I should maybe check some other stuff out by this band and a few of the others that made it big around that time. Thanks for a great rec Nate. RIYL: Metalcore with heartfelt lyrics that contain a real positive message. Favourite Tracks: A War Inside, Understanding What We've grown To Be, Everything as Planned
Fantastic review and it gave me chills reading it. Kyle really was the soul of the band and you can’t deny how powerful his lyrics are and that maybe he was telling us something about himself all along. I highly recommend their discography and I give them so much credit for pushing forward despite this horrible tragedy.
