I’m not meaning to further a debate about it, I just wanted to share one of the reasons that lead me to eventually have diminished interest - but as I said, I don’t think my opinion matters much. I think the concept of this group is neat.

@Kvothe and I traded recently and they gave me:

    The Hunna: Dare (2017)

    untitled 5.png

The Hunna are a rock band from Hertfordshire in England and formed in 2015 and this is their second studio album. Their debut album, 100, gained a lot of traction from the massive campaigning they did on social media. They also gained a lot of attention by opening for Jimmy Eat World in 2016.

Sound wise, the band sticks to a pop rock sound that is a mix of Foals, Deaf Havana, The 1975 with some nods to Jimmy Eat World as well. With all this being said, there is something about the album that is missing and I can't quite put my finger on it. The production is great, the band is fantastic, the vocals are on point but it just seems too safe or "cookie cutter" and the aforementioned bands that they compare to all have that little something extra that gives them an edge and more of an identity.

On that same note, the band bookends the album with two songs that are directed at all of their "haters" and to prove that they didn't get where they are just by garnering "likes" on Facebook. Opening number and title track, Dare, comes out swinging with soaring vocals, crunching guitars and a fantastic rhythm section. You can tell this band puts on a fantastic live show and the songs are meant to be played at a festival with thousands of people singing along. They just have this big anthemic sound that feels like they are meant to command the stage.

    "...and I dare you,
I dare you to come 'round,
and if you're gonna play the game,
I'm gonna put you in your place now..."

While closing track, Y.D.W.I.W.M. (You Don't Want it With Me), continues their quest to prove that they are not some manufactured boy band. This song further utilizes soaring vocals and the band firing on all cylinders.

"I'm so sorry everybody's gonna hear this,
But you should think before you go and say shit,
I know it's hard, it's hard for you to admit,
That your ego's too big a hit,
You don't want it with me,
    You don't want it..."

Overall, you know you are going to get with song titles such as Flickin' Your Hair, Lover, Summer and Babe, Can I Call? But in the end, it's the music that really speaks for itself. By the end of the record you will rocking out playing air guitar and singing along. The song, One, has riff stripped right from Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" and you can't help but nod along.

The band does show us they can be sentimental with the track, Mother, a song about singer/guitarist Ryan Potter's mother who died tragically. It's ballad style song with jangly guitars and dreamy synths. It's a very well written song while showcasing the talent and diversity the band is capable of.

Overall, this is a fun pop rock record and I can see myself revisiting it quite a bit!

Awesome review! I really like this group so much, I'm glad to see people picking such interesting albums to trade with people. That As Tall As Lions album is so good. This group has helped me remember some awesome older albums and hear some really great music that I haven't heard before. I can't wait to see your reviews for the albums I recommended.

The new Trash Boat album is out today.

The first one is one of my favourite UK Pop Punk releases of the last few years, alongside releases from Neck Deep, Boston Manor and Creeper.

The new one fucking rips too. Hardcore leaning pop punk done exceptionally well. Also I have mutual friends with the lead singer and it turns out he is LGBT so that's cool, love seeing more people from that sphere involved in our world.

  19. I had fun reading these! Love that ATAL album. The whole thing is good but something about "Ghost of York" is just on another level. I think you captured my feelings well when you said it always blows you away!

Funny you should mention "See-Saw" and that it would've fit well as the last track on the album. It is intended to be the last track! YG is an Australian band and when they brought the album to the US they shuffled the track order for some reason. If you look up the original track listing it flows much better. It even has one different track. I'm used to the US version because I heard it so many times before I discovered this, but when I did it made so much sense! I recently got the album on vinyl and since it was only pressed in Australia it has the intended sequencing. I definitely think it is the best way to experience the album! My only complaint is that "Someone Else's Dream" is the song that was added for the US version and that's a great track.

Great review, I wasn't sure that this would have the "rock-y" essence that I was expecting from the band from previous iterations and reviews but I enjoyed the album for what it was and probably will revisit a few songs to bop around to.

I have a very similar view to what you said in the review. They have some good songs but it feels a little safe to me. It's good enough but they don't have much to differentiate themselves.

    That's awesome - thanks! :-)

Oh wow, that's so cool to know! I'll have to see if I can track down a bit more information about the Australian release!

A fun bit of information: "Drowned" was firmly stuck in my head when I woke up this morning. So catchy, lol! (I also had the majority of both albums cycling through my head when I went for a run a few hours after writing the reviews.)

  24. Nice! Yeah "Drowned" is a good one. Their following album Casino Twilight Dogs is just as good and leans just a little bit more pop. I almost gave you that one instead. Maybe next time we're paired :-)

@anonimito gave me Emerson Hart - Cigarettes & Gasoline this week to listen to. If anyone has traded with @anonimito, you know the band Tonic is his jam. Last week we were paired together and he gave me their album Head On Straight and I really enjoyed it, so this week he gave me lead singer Hart's solo album to check out. As expected it definitely has a Tonic vibe to it, but this album is more stripped down and more singer/songwriter feeling than the bands albums that I've heard.
This album was released in 2007 and like Tonic's album Head on Straight, it has some very personal songs on this album as well. It reached #15 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and both "I Wish The Best For You" and "If You're Gonna Leave" were released as singles for the album. These 2 songs are probably my favorites on the album as well as the titular track. The song "Cigarettes & Gasoline" is apparently about Hart's father who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia who just left their house one day and disappeared. If you like the singer/songwriter genre or Tonic or @anonimito's taste in music you should give this album a listen.

I would just like to say again that this Club is one of my favorite things ever! I look forward to checking it daily to see everyone's reviews and interactions. It's been a tough week personally, and listening to this album and some other albums that I see recommended here really helped out. I'm not usually one to get depressed or let things bother me, but this week really tested me, and coming on here and interacting with people here really truly made a difference. Music really does heal and save and all that other stuff they say it does. So, thanks to everyone who's made this club as awesome as it is! I can't wait to trade with more people and to have some fun and interesting conversations as well.
