It’s a terrible idea. If we imposed that, for example @anonimito wouldnt have heard Wolves or Vessels, both albums they loved enough to go out and buy and listen to frequently. We shouldn’t deprive someone of being introduced to an album they may love because it’s been ‘retired’
Is that AOF, if so you should really check out Watch Out! When you have some spare time, it’s an all timer for me.
I see two sides to this. If you are just recommending everyone the same album, it gets boring reading the same reviews, I won't lie. IF you are doing it because you think that particular person will like the album, then I see no harm in it being recommended multiple times. It is context dependant and we should all be tailoring our recs imo. It is. I have just never gotten around to it!
FYI my stance on there 10 album retire thing is that we shouldn’t retire stuff. If someone hasn’t heard an album and it’s what they’re into then it’s fair game to rec it imo.
I recommend on a mix based on their tastes, and if I have lots of options available. If I’m paired with someone that has heard a lot of what I have to offer, and that’s my only option, I will rec it. ALSO, sometimes you don’t know. When I recommended Wolves go @anonimito that was a shot in the dark, and they ended up loving it despite what I thought I knew of their tastes
what if we made the limit 15? is there a compromise here? and we don't retire albums totally, just that particular user can't rec the same album. if they have offered it that many times
In the end, recs are always a hit and miss stab in the dark. We shouldn't retire things, but I do think variation in recs in important to a degree. I don't think I've recommended anything twice yet (might be about to change) but I have no qualms doing so if I believe that person will truly enjoy it. Don't retire stuff, basically. Just don't recommend the same album 10 weeks in a row.
TLDR: I don't think we need a hard and fast rule on it. Maybe we just use a personal policing system. Everyone here seems pretty intelligent and I think everyone can be trusted not to over do it.
In the context of this; I'm happy to accept both albums and did mention that I enjoyed Vessels but had not heard the previous Starset album which @Bad Frequencies and I had spoken about. This gives me that chance to listen to this when, honestly, I probably would not have went through the back catalogue. Set rules can sometimes just cause an uproar if not followed and may require some tracking to determine what albums have been offered and reviewed which, in a community this size, may not be plausible.
I personally try to tailor my album recommendations to what I think the person I'm paired with will enjoy. Also, there is a bit of a fatigue factor when reading reviews for the same album (at least for me personally). I try to read every review in here, but I will most likely skim through a review of something that I've read a review for multiple times.
Honestly, the likelihood that I would have tried out either of those albums without having the review to write is close to 0%. That's just me, though.
I do agree, but again I don't want to tell people how to do something. We all work differently and I like that about here.
I was paired with @Nate_Johnson I gave him: of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals He gave me: Amy Shark - Love Monster Turnstile - Time & Space
