Got major post festival blues today and that video isn’t helping lol (it is a really well shot vid though). Take me back to that wonderful field.
I have never seen that album art for The Struts hahaha. Had a look there and it's the rerelease art, surprised I have never seen it. Great write-up! Glad you share the same "should be bigger" feeling, they actually have a Queen cover of We Will Rock You on the Japanese release of the album with a few acoustic versions. The Struts are such a fantastic rock band and hopefully with their next album (due next month, I think) will just mean bigger and better things. TSL have always been a nostalgic band for me, from listening to SILYMI to BOATS then that jump in musical direction to... Direction, I wasn't sure it was the same band but Kenny Vasoli's vocals are something that cannot be sidestepped incidentally it is an album that I played in my car back in 2007 Great reviews, I'm pretty proud of The Struts on a personal level so I'm glad they were a hit for you and that you might revisit them and TSL are just damn fun. Thanks @Bad Frequencies !
Such a good album. And they’re really good live. Nathan also has a solo record that’s pretty good too
Awesome review! If anyone gets the chance to see them live they definitely need to check them out. They are even better live in my opinion.
Awesome review! One of all time favorite albums. You should check out the Acoustic album version as well.
Great review and this album is my favorite in their discography. I think it’s primarily due to mastermind, Kurt Ballou’s, incredible production.
Great review and make sure you check out the Vacationer record that was released this year. It’s Kenny’s solo project and is the perfect album for summer.
Awesome! Glad you liked it. I will never get tired of hearing the doublebass intro to Perfection Through Silence. You didn't mention the 13 minute track Ender lol. I agree so hard. I actually prefer Stay With Me acoustic over the original version. Every song on there translated great to acoustic though, even harder songs I wouldn't have thought so like Bite marks and Bloodstains and What It Is To Burn.
Dang that sounds cool. Jelly of Foo's and Sum 41of course, but man..... So jelly of the Alexisonfire, Atreyu and Silverstein. I'm glad Alexisonfire came on, but I'm surprised they didn't ask them to open giving the situation and ask Atreyu or Silverstein to move up to closer.
I think AOF might be bigger in Canada than the other 2 bands. They certainly are here in the UK. Still that’s an awesome bill, whichever order they play in.
Not gonna lie, this is my favorite Stating Line record. I know Say It Like You Mean It is the fan fav right? So is that a hot take?
I'm not sure if Alexisonfire is bigger than Silverstein here, but I felt like people knew their songs more than Silverstein. But I feel like that might be due to the fact Silverstein has released a lot of albums since the last Alexisonfire album, so their show had a lot of newer songs people don't know much while Alexisonfire was only older songs since they don't have newer ones. People sang the old Silverstein songs though. I see so many people bashing on the organization because of the Sum 41 show and the A7X situation. The one big problem with the festival is that there's the big 80,000 people venue and the next biggest stage is only 10,000 people capacity. So each years, there's always a couple bands like Sum 41, or Three Days Grace that are too big for that smaller stage but too small for the big stage, and it just overflows really fast. So people say that the organization is stupid and should have put them on the 80,000 capacity stage. So we see a lot of people come up with "easy" solutions like "they should have put them last week instead of that other band that didn't deserve the big stage because I don't like them", because clearly bands don't have a busy schedule. The stupidest thing I've seen is "they could have asked Sum 41 to move their Ontario show on Saturday to put them on the big stage instead of Alexisonfire and put Alexisonfire Sunday instead of Sum 41". Yeah right, that's how show scheduling works. The best solution would be to have a 25-30k stage, but you need a place for that.
Also, 100C$ is pretty cheap for the lineup we get, but people still say it's way too expensive because 10 years ago it was 30C$. If I look at the lineup from 2008, it was nowhere close to what we get now. The only fairly big show I'd say was Linkin Park with Silverstein and Atreyu (my first show ever).
@Petit nain des Îles and I have traded for this week after much deliberation (we apparently have very similar tastes) They will listen to: Creeper- Eternity, In Your Arms I will listen to: Enter Shakari- The Spark
I still prefer the original actually. I can remember driving in my car listing to that song on repeat when it came out.
@Night_Sky and I traded recently and they gave me: Slowdrive: Souvlaki (1993) Slowdrive are a rock band from Reading, Berkshire formed in 1989 and this is their second studio album. Along with My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, this record is considered an essential one in pushing the shoegaze genre forward. Along with shoegaze, the band can best be described as dream pop, indie rock and ambient. The fantastic thing about this band is their ability to craft these beautiful melodies between vocalists Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead. They harmonize so well and it becomes almost impossible to tell where one begins and the other ends. You could almost call them "lazy" and the band isn't trying to win any contests for guitar playing or drumming and relies on the vocalists to create this dreamy, hazy atmosphere you lose yourself in throughout the albums 41 minutes. The guitars create this synth like sound and match the dreamy reverb soaked vocals perfectly. Throughout most of the album it just uses this ambient, spacey almost droning atmosphere. Look no further than opening number, Allison, which makes you want to mix your favorite cocktail, pop on your headphones, sit in a comfy chair and just lose yourself in it. Souvlaki Space Station is a more electronic and bass heavy song and can be attributed to Halstead's recent exposure to a lot of Aphex Twin, dub and drum and bass. It still maintains the shoegaze element but incorporates a lot of other instrumentation that works amazingly. While closer, Dagger, is a stripped down number that at times reminds me of Oasis. No matter what this band does or how they deliver you shoegaze, they do it perfectly. A few of the reviews I read had mentioned that this record was considered the black sheep of the genre partly due to how stripped down it was, but as I had mentioned previously, it is now considered an essential record in the genres history. RIYL: Shoegaze, Ambient, Indie Rock Favorite Songs: Allison Machine Gun When the Sun Hits Souvlaki Space Station
That is at least partially because Silverstein don't tour over here. Shane even said on his podcast that he just doesn't like touring the UK because it's expensive, they never took off here, and they find the weather depressing outside of May-September and so they just don't really bother. Shame, as I think they would be a great pick for Slam Dunk or 2K. CREEEEEEPER. CREEEEEEPER. CREEEEEEPER. CREEEEEEPER.
Right me and @SamLevi11 have finally started to recover from our weekend at 2000 Trees and have managed to sort out our trades for this week. We've decided to keep the 2000 Trees theme going and have both traded an album of a band that we saw live this weekend but that the other didn't. I've given Sam Dream Wife's Self Titled album Sam's given me Sløtface's album Try Not to Freak Out
This week I was partnered with @Chase Tremaine we have given one another Thrice - Palms. Reviews pending the release of the record!
