Ok so the verdict is in. Upon my first listen through, Great Divide is one of my least favorites so I gotta go with @bachna84 . My stand out is the track before it actually, Something More. Album rules though and this style is right up my alley. I'll def be checking this out again, may do a little quick write up about it.

  4. I agree with you both about "Something More." Those two are probably tied as my overall faves

The track after it, Romance in Denial, has a really cool instrumental bridge build up/break down (whatever you want to call it) too. These guys are really talented.

Bring Me the Horizon - That's The Spirit

I’m not sure if everyone can sense a pattern or not, but this is another huge band that I was unfamiliar with. I literally had only heard one song by them before this, Shadow Moses, because of:

I remember it being a nice mix of heavy and synth that I liked, but I guess not enough for me to seek out anything else from them. That was until last week when @Bad Frequencies recommended their latest album.

The album starts off with a slow builder Doomsday which honestly is the only song on here that didn’t do it for me. It was unexpected for the opener of this band I thought was a straight up heavy act to put a slower, more experimental track first. The next track Happy Song takes things in a more upbeat direction kicking right into an awesome guitar riff with a cheerleader like chant over it. These first two tracks set the expectation for an album that is going to be different and have you not knowing what to expect.

The next two tracks are where I started really getting into it. Throne has more of the sound I expected from my only other run in with this band. Really heavy synth acting as the lead melody over power cord guitars with really catchy chorus. I would expect this song to be big for them, if not the lead single off the album. True Friends is up there along with Thrones and is energetic faster track. The strings mixed in the with synth adds a really good sound with the heavier music and screams. This song is maybe the heaviest song on the album, but also incredibly catchy. This group has a knack for mixing aggressiveness, catchiness and being experimental at the same time.

After True Friends, the songs slows down a bit with some more somber sounding songs for almost the rest of the album. That’s not a bad thing though, as this stretch contains my two favorite tracks by them, What you Need and Avalanche. What you Need is a more traditional rock song, heavy riffs and a good mix of soft and harsh vocals. Even had a guitar solo in the bridge which I am always a sucker for. Avalanche follows that up with a song that even though the music can get heavier in parts, is pretty toned back with my favorite chorus and melody on the disc.

The closer Oh No is a fun pop jam, with an upbeat drum beat and the melody being set to harmonizing group “oohhhs” while the vocalist sings “Don't call it a party 'cause it never stops”. Didn’t expect to have a sax part in it, but it was a nice surprise. For sure a fun way to close out an album.

Overall I really liked this one, the album has more singing than expected and not a lot of screams but it is still a solid disc overall with only one song I may not go back to. If their earlier stuff is heavier I may have to back track and see what they are all about.

Highlights: Avalanche, What you Need, Thrones

  8. You and @bachna84 should check out the follow-up album, Chapters. It's almost just as good. The only downside is that the guitar riffs/solos are a little more typical -- they lack the distinct style of this album. But they're also more technically "impressive," so it kinda evens out.

Hey guys! My name is Jim and I’m excited to join the CMCS! For my first week, I exchanged with @ugman_2000 and was given Good For Me by The Swellers.

The Swellers are a now defunct band hailing from Flint, Michigan, proving that Flint is known for more than just the water crisis. With a melodic, powerful, pop punk indie rock sound the band formed in 2002 and called it quits in 2015, releasing EPs and albums along the way. Good For Me was their third full length, released on June 14th, 2011, on Fueled By Ramen.

The opening track, “Runaways” kicks the album off with a powerful, upbeat, and catchy lead guitar riff. Instantly, I’m reminded of one of my favorite (and hometown) bands, Midtown. Vocalist Nick Diener has a voice reminiscent of Autopilot Off, and I’m sucked into the album that is perfect for turning up while rolling down the windows in July. The song ends with a half time reprise of that catchy lead, which I absolutely loved!

The next track, “Inside My Head”, definitely was my favorite track. The verses have me a feel of the band Over It, with driving drums, a singable melody, and a catchy chord progression. The chorus comes in with an anthemic lyric of “Wish you could see inside my head, to answer all the questions that you have”. That’ll have you singing along before the song is even over.

“The Best I Ever Had” was the lead single from the record, and for good reason. Another song with a fast pace, perfect for those summertime drives that I took while listening to this record.

Overall, this was a record I would definitely recommend to the listeners of Chorus.fm. I had always heard of The Swellers, but it took me until now to really take a listen to them, and I’m glad I did.

RIYL: Midtown, Autopilot Off, Over It
