Hey @anonimito am I missing any reviews other than the 4 I owe you from the last two weeks? I'm ok with it being posted publicly. I take pride in not missing any but I'm open to being fact checked
I vote against it because even though it's the least best SOTY album, I am down with everyone hearing it
Retired albums could go in the CMCS hall of fame. There could be a special section in the thread’s first post dedicated to these albums. Make it happen @Kevo
No. No teebs. Because what if I start recommending Morning a lot, it’s already been reviewed 3 times. 7 more and it would be benched
Well good thing I make the rules :) I will not be denied introducin people to later Hawthorne and Starset!!
Icarus the Owl - Rearm Circuits @disambigujason gave me this rec a few sessions ago. I had never heard of this band before and I have to add that I love the album cover, which reminds me of Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn Failed Transmissions kicks right into things without any build up most album openers tend to do, the lead guitar tapping and fast drums set the pace for a hardcore/punk type song. The singer starts in immediately too and has a great singing voice, but it took me a little by surprise. Normally with this type of music the vocals are heavier, but this is not a heavy band in that way. The vocals are softer and have pop sensibilities which makes this band really unique for me mixed with this kind of music. Every now and then the singer will have a raspy yell, kind of like the singer from Blindside which I’ll say I wish they used more. This is one of two tracks that features heavier vocals, the other being Hidalgo’s Secret Hideout which ended up being my favorite on the album. The tracklist is mixed really well with really poppy songs like Coma Dreams and DoubleSleep and faster paced Do Not Resuscitate and The Vanishing Point keeping things fresh for a really enjoyable listen. The closer Shadowboxing starts pretty stripped back with just light synch, guitar and vocals for the first minute and slowly adding in the rest of the band, with everyone coming fully in about halfway through leading to the album ending on one of their catchiest and enjoyable songs on the album for me. Being late on this rec gave me a few extra listens which I appertained because there is so much going on music wise with this song. I will be checking out previous works as this is their most recent album. Sounds like: Protest the Hero a little toned down with really catchy pop melodies. Highlights: Hidalgo’s Secret Hideout, Coma Dreams, Failed Transmissions, The Vanishing Point
Glad you liked it man! I’d heard a handful of Icarus songs before this record but this was the first I thought where they put everything together just right. I will be submitting my backlog of reviews shortly. Lastly I wouldn’t be against retiring albums, but maybe just retire the same rec from the same user after 10 times I like when people rec albums they were recently rec’d. Over time I will rec gang of Youths over 10 times but at that point of nobody else has recirculated it I hope we have a CMCS starter pack given to new members and it’s just part of that.
Unless the recommendations weren't stated in the thread somewhere, you're up-to-date, according to my records!
Re: "retiring" albums: in my opinion, that wouldn't be very helpful. It's not like one person is being recommended the album multiple times. The number of reviews just shows how many distinct people have reviewed the album. In my mind, the fact that an album actually gets reviewed is a sign that the album was enjoyable, or at the least, "worth" reviewing to the reviewer. Would we want to retire an album, essentially prohibiting new members from reviewing an album they may love? To think that I could have missed out on "Vessels" if I had joined later than I did...it's one of my top favorite recommendations so far! Also, those particular albums' frequency of reviews is a function of one or two things: 1) an admin (who does the lion's share of recommendations overall) recommending it and 2) the album being "new" or relevant at the time. If a new album comes out soon that I really enjoy, I'm probably going to recommend it a bunch of times (to people who should enjoy it) just as part of the excitement. As someone who has been recommended a couple of new albums so far, it's cool to feel like I'm "there" for the release rather than getting on board many months later. (I may have missed out on cool Starset vinyl if I hadn't heard it when I did!) And from what I can tell, we try to recommend albums we think our partner will enjoy - it's not like we're trying to force someone to hear an album we know they'll dislike. Just my 2 cents.
As an admin I personally believe albums should not be retired. See @anonimito’s statement above. Plus, it really goes against the entire premise of the club. Hell, I’ve given Heavy Things to so many people that never even knew about the band in the first place.
