@iCarly Rae Jepsen and I traded this past week and they gave me:

    Neko Case: Hell-On (2018) Anti-

To those unfamiliar, Neko Case, is a singer/songwriter who is most popularly known for being one of the contributors of the indie rock group, The New Pornographers. This is her 7th studio album under her own name and sees her exploring a wide range of genres including indie rock, folk rock and Americana. While this is admirable and shows how diverse of an artist she is, it was really hard to grasp onto anything as each song was so different. I had read a few reviews to see where others stood on it, and most had applauded it while also saying it was her most accessible and pop oriented. I was shocked to hear this because the last thing I thought this record to be was immediately accessible and pop. Although, one of the lead singles from the album, Bad Luck, is a great pop song that instantly grabbed my attention. Many of the songs are these slow brooding ballads that are hard to connect to. I gave it three spins to be sure, each time picking up the same handful of songs I had heard on my initial listen. Don't get me wrong, there are some great songs on here and they tend to be the more folky/Americana numbers but they are few and far between. I don't want to go into a long review bashing an album I didn't connect with because clearly a lot of other people love her albums and this one specifically. Her voice is amazing, the instrumentation is fantastic and the production is on point. I just believe that if you have not jumped on the Neko Case ship, then you most likely will not with this album. I could be completely wrong of course, but I know that she is known for being very quirky and diverse on her records.

I think that everyone should give this record a spin at least once to see if they enjoy this type of sound but as I said, if you are a fan of her work then you probably became so a long time ago. I unfortunately was not the biggest fan but did find a few songs that I enjoyed that I could see myself returning to in the future.

    RIYL: Indie Rock, folk, Americana

    Favorite songs:
    Last Lion of Albion
    Halls of Sarah
    Bad Luck
    Pitch or Honey

I’ve just bought tickets to see The Fever 333. I’ve yet to listen to their album but Jason live is just so fun so I thought why not.

Jason is a great frontman and I really am not trashing on The Fever 333...I just greatly prefer letlive and Pressure Cracks to them at this point. I'm sure it'll be a fun show!

I’ve only heard 1 Pressure Cracks song and thought it was ok. I think from the little I’ve heard both bands that they pale in comparison to Let Live. I won’t be happy until Jason brings back the big melodies that LL had.

(Disclaimer: I'm a doctor, not a writer, so I apologize for the tardiness and the sloppy writing. But I really enjoyed this and look forward to my next matchup!)

For my first ever matchup last week, @Bad Frequencies gave me Everything in Transit by Jack's Mannequin. As an AP/Chorus member since about 2009, I knew this album was seen as a "scene classic," so I was excited to give this album a try, as I hadn't before heard a single song by Andrew McMahon or any of his various projects. On first listen, I found myself saying, "man, I wish i had heard this back in 2005." I have largely moved away from the pop-punk genre over the years, and I initially wasn't grabbed by most of this, but after 3-4 listens I was feeling less nostalgic and realized this might be something I can return to. The piano-driven pop-punk sound isn't exactly in my wheelhouse, but from the first track, the immediately-catchy "Holiday From Real," to the driving rhythm of album highlight "Bruised," there is a lot to love in the front half of this album. However, the back half of the album mostly tends to run together and lose my attention. Outside of a few moments, such as "The Mixed Tape," the lyrics never really stand out as anything above average. But, overall, I did enjoy this more than I anticipated.

Favorite tracks: Bruised, The Mixed Tape

Great first review! I’m glad you liked some of the album, and I agree the front half is stronger. The ones you mentioned along with I’m Ready and Dark Blue are probably my favorites from this one

I have met some incredible people in my decade+ on Absolutepunk and Chorus. I have had fun conversations where I've laughed out loud, and had "heated" conversations about bands I feel passionate about.

I will be logging off for the foreseeable future tonight. I'd tag memorable people in my post, but there are too many to possibly tag everyone. You all have been there for me during the happiest and darkest times in my life. Thank you everyone for your impact on my life no matter how big or small.
