I have heard the band’s name thrown around, but have never heard a single song of theirs. The record begins with “Falling Out Of Trees” where the singer sings with a lot of passion. It began on a slower song that set the tone for the record, which I’m always for, and went into an upbeat song during track two, “It’s About Time” The song has a pulsing bassline, and nice prominent lead guitar throughout the song. I could see it becoming very catchy after a few more listens. The singers voice reminded me a lot of the singer of Acceptance at points, especially the chorus of “It’s About Time”. After thinking this I did see that the band was from Seattle, where I believe Acceptance are from too! The song “Lesser Things” reminded me a lot musically and lyrically of the Academy Is… which is definitely a good thing! They seemed to have a lot of influence in general from those types of bands (Acceptance, The Academy Is..) which was a time period of music I’m still in love with to this day, so this record really takes me back. Some other highlights from the record for me were “Colors” which gave me some Young The Giant vibes. “Come Back When You Can” was a very optimistic song, with gorgeous Coldplay-esque melodies, and hopeful supportive lyrics of a loved one. It was easily the highlight of the record at this point. If Coldplay had written this song, it would’ve been a radio hit everyone was familiar with. “Get Up” and a lot of the songs in general had a lot of similar lyric content about a ‘she’ who has “lost their way” “given up” etc. It made me wonder throughout the record if this was all written about a specific person who was going through a rough point in their life. It almost made me wonder in piecing together the similarities if it’s written to be a fictional/non-fiction concept album following one character. The last 30 seconds or so of “Get Up” the band almost had a Sigur Ros moment of sorts, which I loved. “The Takers” kicked the rhythm back up, beginning with piano, and frantic drums. “First Floor People” was a stripped down song that was piano-heavy with very light drums backing it up. It was a gorgeous ballad that really showcased the singer’s vulnerability. The song picks up into a bigger moment reminiscent of Civil Twilight’s best ballads. “Response” also showed the singer pushing his vocals to their capacity in a more upbeat song. “Faded” was another good ballad song. I enjoyed the presence of the strings a lot in this track. “Stars” showed the singer having his closest Thom Yorke moment on the record vocally. On this song, and a lot of songs on the record. “Numb” was a pretty unique song on the record. It had a bouncy sound to it in the drums and bass and almost sounded like it could fit in on our very own Chorus user @Mr. Serotonin Emerson record. The record ended with “Please Don’t Go”. The beginning reminded me almost too much of the song “Transatlantacism” by Death Cab For Cutie. It was a very gorgeous track throughout though that had a lot of vulnerability, and the highest range used vocally on the record.

I can’t wait to check out the rest of this band’s discography in the coming weeks as I really enjoyed this record. I’m also pretty intrigued that it looks like they have a group of themed EP’s called Love Me, Love You, and Know Love. The band had a lot of influences throughout the record of bands that I really like which really made them sit well with me. I can see a lot of replays coming with this band. My only complaint with the record is that at 13 minutes and 54 minutes the record seemed a little long. It also never really had an identity. It went back and forth between upbeat songs and piano ballads, which impacted the overall flow the record. Some of the songs tended to blend into one another too, and sometimes sounded similar I’m interested in going deeper into their discography to see which sound they ended up leaning towards later in their careers.

Favorite Songs: It’s About Time, Colors, Come Back When You Can, The Takers, First Floor People, Faded, Please Don't Go

First up, @Davjs

Staind- Self Titled

Staind is a band that needs no introduction, being one of the more well known names of their genre. I will admit in my early years of high school I had listened to a couple of their albums when I was beginning to experiment with rock music, and I quite liked them. Their guitarist also currently plays in the band Saint Asonia, which everyone knows I am a fan of. So this 2011 album was labeled as a resurgence for the band; and as soon as I dove in I was met with what is probable the heaviest sounding work I have ever heard from this band. Admittedly on first listen, the album was a bit off putting for me because of the difference in sound; this was a return to the heaviest songs the band had ever done and them amped it up a notch. There is also a lot of pain and anguish, a lot of distain and rage in these songs both musically and lyrically. The album borders on straight up metal in a lot of places, but retains that familiarity of Aaron Lewis and Staind, and thus with a couple more listens I began to really enjoy myself while listening.

'Eyes Wide Open' is a fantastic opening to this album, starting with these low rumbling drums before the grinding guitars kick in; and from there on out you are on a dark journey with this album. Lyrically, the themes are of the disenchanted, the anguish, the tortured moments in life. The band sells these lyrics well, and behind the roaring guitars and insane riffs the songs come into their own. These songs will get the blood pumping in no time. Both the opening song and the second track 'Not Again' show off these facts nicely; also including both melodically sung vocals as well as some outright enraged bellowing screams. There are glimpses of light in the darkness though; songs like 'Failing' scale it down a bit and will most definitely resonate with people looking for lyrics and music that is going to hit close to home. And the closing track 'Something To Remind You' doubly so, with that song being the only slow and soft song on the album; with it also containing the most passionately sung lyrics on the entire album and having soft plucked beautiful guitars to backdrop it. Songs like those are the light, while songs like 'The Bottom' and 'Now' are the most rapid fire, heavy and gritty bits of darkness in the album. There are some moments where the album tends to blend together a bit because of the reliance on the heavy riffs (Which is a reason I know Davjs loves this album); and the 'rapping' part in 'Wannabe' is still unlistenable to me after several listens to the album. This album has grit and bite to it though; and if you are a fan of alternative metal, or Staind's previous heavier works in general, this album is going to have you jumping into a mosh pit in no time.

There are very few faltering on the album aside from what I mentioned above. Possibly my favorite release by this band, I definitely can see myself returning to this album when I have some pent up rage to release. Just know when you dive into this album, the anger and malice is going to come out. I recommend it though and just like the insanely great and best song on the album 'Paper Wings' states during its aggressive chorus; dive in and "burn your paper wings and say goodbye." Stand out tracks for this album are: Eyes Wide Open, Not Again, Failing, The Bottom, Paper Wings, Something To Remind You

Haha, the rapping in Wannabe was suppose to be done by Snoop Dogg but something came up timeline wise and Aaron ended up doing it. I agree that it's kinda laughable, but at the same time I respect Aaron for putting out a heavy as shit album that also features rapping, while also doing a country album the same year. Kinda does it all lol.

Glad you liked it, I think they stepped everything up vocally and instrumentally overall on this album from previous works.

Oh, I have listened AT LEAST 10 times. Musically it their most complex with solos! Sevendust has solos!!! I love Lajon's vocals on this as well and is by far some of his best singing. It feels very melodic yet heavy at the same time. I would come out of hibernation if @Bad Frequencies wanted to do a bracket for them. Only if there is enough interest of course!

I want a 7D bracket, even if its just us 3 talking about it lol. I do love the solo on Dirty so much, I'm listening as we speak and it grows every time.
