I'm actually caught up on my reviews for once and I'm checking out some new releases. Haven't listened to anything released since the beginning of April. Anyone have a rec from the last month? I'll check it out right now and post some thoughts.
It’s not from the last month but it is this year (and I’ve only just got into them) but the new DZ Deathrays album “Bloody Lovely” is well bloody lovely. They’re wiki describes them as dance-punk (whatever that genre is) but yeah check this out if you like fun garage rock music.
Oops - sorry! I didn't see that ugman had posted! (edit) Cary Brothers' new album "Bruises" is really wonderful. Much better than I'd hoped!
Liveblog: This doesn't really sound like a genre I'm going to enjoy *presses play* Cautiously optimistic WTF? . . . This is kind of rad actually
I like this! They've got a Royal Blood/Death from Above thing going on. I've been pretty into this style the past few years when it's done well. I feel like a lot of bands that play this kind of stuff wash it out with intentionally shitty production, and I appreciate that that isn't the case here. Sounds pretty crisp despite the fuzzy, garage rock kind of sound.
Awesome, glad you liked it. One of my mates recommended it to me recently and I’ve really been enjoying it. They’re a duo from Australia and there’s a few bands like this coming out of there atm.
When I posted that I knew there was a good chance I'd be listening to Bad Frequencies, the only question was whether someone else was going to post before you That being said I will do HH after Cary Brothers. Looking forward to finally hearing it!
I'm on the last track now. Thanks a lot man, this thing kicks! I'm definitely going to be spending more time with it. "Back & Forth" was another one that stood out on first listen. I had never heard of this band before and honestly didn't expect something out of the blue like that.
Yeah Spanish Love Songs is really good, it’s been growing on me even more since I reviewed it. It not in my top 5 but it’s certainly in with a shout for my top 10 aoty so far.
Heard this one already! It was released March 30. I thought I made myself clear that I've heard all recorded music prior to April of 2018. I liked it, but their particular brand of rock generally doesn't do a whole lot for me tbh. I will probably revisit it at some point because the amount of hype it's getting around here has me thinking it's worth spending some more time with it.
Yeah this album took me by surprise as well, glad you liked it so much. Back and Forth is awesome. My favs from it are Shred For Summer, Back & Forth and Witchcraft Pt 2. Also I love the photo they used for the album art on this.
Looks like I've got most of the rest of my workday planned out. Hopefully no one around here has the gall to distract me with things like "email" or "meetings."
"Say" is a fantastic pop song. Didn't expect that after the quiet opening track. I've never listened to this guy before and I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. Pretty big jump from DZ Deathrays, but I'm about it.
Another big pop song with "Til the Stars." I like this mix of the softer acoustic stuff and the bigger pop bangers. 2 for 2 so far today!
Glad you're enjoying it! I've had the whole album stuck in my head, but I admit to being a tad bored by "Cool City." No idea why that was the lead single (I think it was, at least). The verses are my main gripe. Cary hasn't released many LPs, but I love his recent EPs - his "Let Me Be" EP may be my favorite EP of all time. Very chill and slow, but simply beautiful. "Run Away" is my favorite song by him.
Yeah "Cool City" dragged a little bit for me too, I'm surprised to hear that was a single. "Say" seems like the obvious single to me, sounds like it has a lot of mainstream appeal. Enjoying "Everything I Say" right now, nice way to wind down the album. Going to be spending more time with this one as well for sure!
"In Gloom" is a good opener, starts out a bit atmospheric and ends up being a pretty catchy full-band number
