I was warmly invited by @Nate_Johnson into this whole thing, and was started off with Songs of Praise by Shame. Shame is a 5-piece post-punk band from South London. Their debut Songs of Praise came out last month and has apparently been getting all kinds of praise (lol) in the music world. I must admit, I was immediately clueless because I didn't even know what post-punk was. I am familiar with literally zero of the related artists, so this truly was a whole new affair. There's post-hardcore and post-rock so it follows that there should be post-punk right? Right. Songs of Praise is a pretty quick listen at 44 minutes. The vocals rotate between spoken word to shouting to singing. The vocals are probably my least favorite part of the album, and I wouldn't call them good by any stretch of the imagination. But hey, something tells me that vocals might not be a huge point of interest for the post-punk scene. Definitely fun to shout along to, that's for sure. I do feel like I would appreciate this band live so much more, because they have a ton of energy throughout their songs. Where the vocals kinda felt lacking to me, I did enjoy the music for the most part. There are some downright catchy guitar riffs and other fun noises peppered throughout. "Fun noises" is a terrible descriptor, but apparently post-punk bands are known to incorporate avant-garde elements of other genres into their music, so maybe that makes more sense. The closer "Angie" kinda lulled me into a trance and was a perfect way to end the album. This album feels like a good entry point into a genre that I am terrible at describing. I have a feeling that if I dove deeper into the post-punk world, I might get lost and/or turned off. Still, Songs of Praise is a fun album that you should be blasting from your car with the windows down all summer. I can definitely see why it's so deserving of its praise even if it isn't my cup of tea. Favorite songs: Concrete, One Rizla, Angie Don't read these lyrics out loud to your mom: Gold Hole RIYL: House shows, slagging off, the movie "Trainspotting"
Super super nice write up dude! Glad you are enjoying it so much. I will find the time to post mine tomorrow!
He bought her diamonds He bought her pearls He made her whisper that she's daddy's girl She wants the money It comes with his cream So she closes her eyes and pretends it's a dream Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Sweat stains the wrinkles Tongue touches the hole His wife's at work and his kids are at school She feels so dirty She knows that it's wrong But she feels so good in Louis Vuitton Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Pop my cork Feel me drip While you talk Let me in I want to stay I'll wear you down girl I'll buy a way You got a gold hole sugar You got a gold hole sugar You got a gold hole sugar You got a gold hole sugar And it makes me feel like I am rich And it makes me feel like I am rich And it makes me feel like I am rich It makes me scratch that tender itch Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up Shake me up
Thank you, though the real congrats should go to @theagentcoma for getting to experience that album blind in 2018
Very true. That album is just wall to wall jams. New Fears is my personal favorite, it's been a while since a song got me hyped like that one does.
I'm fairly confused how this thread works, even after reading the OP but it kinda seems like my shit.
