I’m a bad person because I love pop and I haven’t heard that album yet It’s on a long list of things I have to check out
Seriously though, I do want to take this moment to say that the CMCS does accept all Recs from all genres. On the same coin though everyone has their specific tastes. All that @skurt and I ask is that you are respectful to everyone’s tastes. Except country. Fuck country. Ok fine even country.
Time to talk about my recommendations from @Nate_Johnson! All Pigs Must Die - Hostage Animal (2017) I just want to say that I'm not totally sure about how to write about metal albums, while I love metal music I don't listen to much of it or write about it. I had never heard of this band before, and was happy to find an intense record that didn't let up. Kevin Baker's vocals are passionate and pissed off, thrash riffs are frantic and all over the album, and Ben Koller's drumming is fantastic and memorable. While I enjoyed Hostage Animal, I can't quite pick out stand out tracks since tracks often blend together. This makes a cohesive listening experience but I personally enjoy a tad more variety to keep it more interesting. This is where my second rec comes in! Converge - The Dusk In Us (2017) The Dusk In Us is another frenetic, powerful metal record. It's an album full of chaos, and features some tender, melodic moments. Metalsucks' review of this album calls vocalist Jacob Bannon "unhinged", and I couldn't agree more. He's frustrated and genuine throughout all of The Dusk In Us. The title track is a moody slow burner, the type of track I look for in heavier releases - how artists use space and lighter moments is interesting to listen to! Elsewhere, aggressive thrash and tension builds to create another favourite track of mine, "Reptilian". The Dusk In Us is an album that explores the everyday demons we encounter, which makes for a cathartic listen that I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for the recs, Nate!
I’m glad you enjoyed them both and truly appreciated The Dusk in Us for what it is. Converge are a band that continue to set trends in heavy music and I personally believe that no other band can duplicate what they do and it’s just magic when the four of them get together. Kevin Baker is probably my favorite “hardcore” vocalist besides Wes Eisold and I am really glad we got to hear something from him after The Hope Conspiracy.
I’m late to the rap game but i wanted to share some empathy with the less-than-enthused-about-rap crowd. I’ll find songs i like more than others and some i love but for the most part I think rap as a vocal style doesn’t resonate with me like screaming doesn’t resonate with others, and a lot of the sounds/musicianship don’t resonate with me like heavy guitars don’t do it for other people. All that is not to say i don’t think I’ll ever like it but to say i, and others, may just need the right gateway artist. Fwiw i tend to prefer poppy hip hop a lot more. Also, feel free to throw out recs, don’t need to be partners to do it. Seems like there’s a handful of us in the same boat, not to mention the lurkers.
