  14. I had a good time with a couple of albums from @AlwaysEvolving21 this week.

Matt Skiba and the Sekrets – Kuts
    [IMG]

I’m familiar with a few Trio albums, but haven’t had any exposure to Skiba’s solo work until now. This is a really enjoyable album. It’s a quick listen at 10 tracks and 30 minutes. Pretty standard pop-rock fare, but done very well. There are a lot of nice little fuzzy guitar licks throughout these songs, touches of synth, and hooks that are pretty immediate and sink into you more with each listen. It’s easy to hear in these songs why Skiba is a good fit for Blink. A lot of the melodies sound like they would be right at home on California. Highlights for me are “She Wolf” and “Krazy,” though all 10 tracks are very solid.

Nada Surf – The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy
    [IMG]
I’m somewhat familiar with Nada Surf’s music, but I’m pretty sure I had never heard anything from this album prior to this week. This set of songs is a nice mix of the more laid-back tunes that sound like the songs I know from Let Go and The Weight Is a Gift as well as some tracks with a bit more of a rock edge. None of them disappoint as they all feature that undeniable Nada Surf indie rock sound. Favorites include the immediately catchy “Waiting for Something,” “When I Was Young” (this one starts as a quiet acoustic number that builds to a big and rewarding second half), “The Moon Is Calling,” and “Let the Fight Do the Fighting” (horns!).

Overall, it was a pleasure to listen to a couple of records by two veterans of the scene. Lots of memorable, professional songwriting on display on both of these records. It's no mistake that both have had successful and lasting careers in music.

Hey all. I really, really hate to do this, but I am going to have to remove myself from the club for the foreseeable future. I'm going through some kind of intense personal stuff that is going to prevent me from giving these records the care they deserve. That also means I won't have reviews for my previous partners, and to them, I sincerely apologize. I feel terrible for making you guys listen to stuff and offering nothing in return, but trust me when I say I wouldn't be doing this unless I really had to.

I hope to rejoin again someday in the somewhat near future. Again, sorry to anyone this inconveniences. It's definitely not my first choice. I'll probably keep lurking this thread, so keep having fun! And thank you for understanding.

I'm late for this one again, but I got two albums recommended by @ImAMetaphor 3 weeks ago.

The first album is To Infinity by Special Explosion. It was smoother than what I usually listen to, which probably means I'm less likely to come back to it later, but it was still an enjoyable album and I can see why it was on many people's EOTY lists. My favorites were Gladiator, Skeleton and Going My Way.

Second album is Not to Disappear by Daughter. For some reason I thought I knew some tracks from this band, but I was wrong. I was hoping for a little faster album after the first one, but it was kinda the same type of music. I think I prefered the Special Explosion album, but the singer definitely has a really nice voice on this one. Alone With You was a standout for me.

Overall, I enjoyed the two albums more as background music, which is not my main way of listening to music, but I might go back to them if I'm in the mood for it.

Alexisonfire's Crisis is one of the few albums that when I say changed my life, it did. I maybe listened to "This Could Be Anywhere in the World" 1,000 times my freshman year of HS.
