cheers, this was just weirdly hard for some reason. I feel like if you asked me to rank my favourite 50 TV episodes I could do it in a heartbeat haha
Yeah, that's a great list, I feel similarly about.mind and wouldn't feel intimidated by the films that make anyone else's lists. It's that kind of variety that will.make out list unique!
Unfortunately, I do have to report that I finally tried to give Gummo a watch and despite appreciating Kids and Spring Breakers, I could not get past the CSA and racism in this one. Not judging anyone else because I think I get what it's trying to do, but it was just too much for me.
I've come to realize that any sort of western canon that largely consists of white male voices, be it movies, music, or literature, is largely irrelevant to my interests. My list is more heavily skewed towards films released this century than other users' on here, and I'm okay with that. Not to discredit anyone else's tastes for the classics, I just find comfort in voices that would more closely mirror my own
yeah it's definitely not for everyone, I wasn't sure what I thought of it at first but it's one of those films that's just stuck with me and I find so much of it strangely beautiful despite the obvious ugliness throughout. There's not really anything else that has the same feeling that film gives me. It's not something I'd really recommend to many people though, haha.
I understand that, and would just say there’s also a rich worldwide canon of cinema history from non-white, non male voices that’s valuable. Even in the US, where white men are dominant in the general consensus canon, the history of black cinema is long and diverse and there’s a lot of queer subtext and anticapitalist work in Hollywood’s Golden Age. So I hope that you aren’t put off of checking out older works or the worldwide canon even if it’s not your primary interest!
Yeah, and I'm also hoping some users' lists will give me great places to start with non-Western and non-white male cinema, because they're admittedly blind spots for me aside from the occasional foreign horror film.
To give a bit of a spotlight on a non-white, non-male director who doesn't get anywhere near enough recognition, I absolutely adore the Mongolian filmmaker, Byambasuren Davaa. She made three beautiful little docu-drama films with The Story of the Weeping Camel, Cave of the Yellow Dog & Two Horses of Genghis Khan, about life on the steppes and the traditional communities in Mongolia. She then made her first narrative film last year, Veins of the World, a furiously angry film about environmentalism and rampant capitalism and it's impact on these communities. I love her work, would highly recommend them to anyone.
I encourage people to watch as much diverse cinema as they can but also not to shy away from the classics. Film Cannon is not a monolith it has a plethora of unique voices and opinions through different eras as they wrestled the issues of their time. By watching both you will also see themes mirrored revealing universal truths of the human condition unaffected by time, culture, and privilege. Don't just listen to the voices you find easy to listen to. Watch whatever you what, and sometimes watch something you don't think you'll like because it might surprise you.
