So what constitutes by women, etc. here? Do they have to be primary songwriters or vocalists? Or are Talking Heads or The Summer Set in the running?

  4. ItsAndrew

    Prestigious Prestigious

That's a very good question - and I am open to other ideas, but it appears the NPR list was just women who were frontwomen/vocalists for bands so maybe sticking to that? Unless folks want to expand it, that is.

I was about to ask the same question. I think picking bands in which women are (among) the most prominent members is fine.

Took a whack at this. Lots of repeat artists on my list as I based it on my vinyl collection, Spotify activity, and lastly that NPR list. But it was an interesting exercise and I'm excited to broaden my horizons, especially when it comes to WOC and non-binary artists (who maybe shouldn't be lumped in here unless we just say "Non-Male") which are obviously blind spots for me. Really did away with worrying about recency bias here and just used bias Sorter based on what I enjoy and listen to most often.

    1. Cat Power - Moon Pix
    2. Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel...
    3. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
    4. Snail Mail - Lush

    19. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
    20. Clairo - Immunity

    21. The xx - xx
    22. Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp
    23. Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in the Alps
    24. Ian Sweet - Shapeshifter

  7. Yeah, this is tough because I was wondering about the Pixies. Kim Deal was definitely a prominent member imo, but her role was diminished more and more with each album. Do we just handle that subjectively?

Son of a nutcracker, how am I already in an 18-album hole after the first ballot. Haha

Honestly never heard of Emily Yacina, Dehd, Ian Sweet, Catherine Moan or Crumb. The rest were at least on my radar

  12. Lol, to be fair, Catherine Moan is a semi-local artist that just started releasing music in 2020, so I wouldn't expect anyone here to recognize her, at least yet.

Emily Yacina does a bunch of harmonies for Alex G, but her albums (especially Remember the Silver) are notable in their own right. And that Dehd album is wonderful. I'll have to go back and add Heartthrob to my list, I missed Tegan and Sara.

Dehd is awesome, their latest album is so good. The lead singer used to be in Lala Lala's band. Emily Yacina is awesome too, especially in Alex G's work. Also Crush Crusher is such a good album.

I have always listened to a lot of women. The thing is, most of them were/are R&B artists or, to a way lesser extent, rappers. Because both genres, but especially R&B, are fundamentally singles genres (especially in their more commercial forms, which is my preference when it comes to R&B), a list of albums doesn't come to me all that organically. I mean, I can make a list of 50 albums easily, but it doesn't really represent the breadth of women I have listened to a lot over the years. Plenty of artists I listened to A LOT won't be represented.

That being said, I think there will be stuff on there that people here haven't listened to, which makes it worth it anyway. I mean, I would would bet five bucks that at best two other people on here have ever listened to Mary Mary :crylaugh:

    Newbie

Made up a quick list, mostly based on my highest listen counts based on Last.Fm. Definitely highlights my blind spots when it comes to pre-2000's music (earliest year represented on my top 50 is 2004), and my list is also heavily comprised of white, American artists. Not thrilled with either of those things, but I feel like it's an accurate representation of my current tastes. Hoping for find some stuff from this thread to help broaden my horizons!

Made a top 50 then used biased sorter so I would not agonize on end about the list. I have a few qualms like I do after any list I make but for the most part it's good. Excited to check out others lists and help fill in the gaps (POC/music from the mid 2000s and prior) since a lot of my list is recent-ish (I also figured lots of folks would cover stuff from the past and wanted to highlight newer releases I love)

    Usual caveats on this that I don't know if everybody on this list identifies as female / non-male, and I don't know the members of every band I like, so could very easily be excluding bands who should "qualify". I also lazily took my overall list from the other thread, and cut the male acts as a starting point;

    1. Bjork - Post
    2. Tegan and Sara - Sainthood
    3. Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
