may be listening to hounds of love for the first time wowee could definitely see this cracking a revised list of mine in a few years. what a release.
I listened to it for the first time in ages yesterday, still really like the first half and then second half is hit-or-miss for me. Definitely a good record, still can't see it ever being one of my favourites.
The whole album is perfect but you like the second better than the side with Running, Cloudbusting and Hounds?! Wild Patrick
I do like when it seemingly out of nowhere just gets glitchy and techy. Like if I was listening on CD I'd have thought it skipped for a second because it's really unexpected the first listen or three. The second side overall seems a little meandering compared with the first, but the first is a lot to live up to
Just jokin around. I do like Either/Or way more but the major label records are cool. I absolutely love some stuff, Everything Means Nothing To Me, Happiness especially, but I think overall, the bigger production produced less thrilling results for me than the earlier stuff. Semi-related, I found this sick JB video yesterday: I can’t remember if I Heart Huckabees OST was in my top 50 or not, but it’s a fave
Good catch! He loved the Beatles and the way those chords move has gotten critical comparisons to them from a number of places.
I always liked Waltz #2 but listened to it differently since learning he was inspired by the propulsive chords of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. You can definitely catch a lot of Beatles in his work, especially as his career progressed. Either/Or is his sweet spot for me, the quintessential Elliot Smith and featuring his best collection of songs
The way he voices out those subtle chord changes in the melodies was genius. Like “Say Yes” sounds like the simplest walk-down chord progression song ever, but he throws these weird G with an augmented 5ths and F9 with a flat 5ths into the bridge that aren’t hard to play but just snap against his melody in the most elegant way.
Say Yes is his best song and that is a big reason why. So simple yet those intricacies make it work to perfection.
Straight up this thread has reignited my love of music. I was in such a slump for the past few months but it's given me so much to listen to. The hits literally keep on coming. I also played Buckets of Rain for my partner after she had a particularly tough day this week and she loved it. Wouldn't have known it without ya'll, so thanks.
Absolutely no rush, but how long are we looking at before a master list? Super excited to see the results
i’m hoping just a few weeks. there’s a lot of lists though haha. i’m sure i could have found an easier way to do it but i’m not an excel wiz. i’ll definitely keep the thread posted though
