That was a great listen. I listened to these two albums a lot this week and this one fit well w them: Soul Station - Wikipedia Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins - Wikipedia Work and Nutty on this one (which don’t have Sonny Rollins) are especially killer
Water is wet lol. Pretty much the soundtrack to an entire semester in college.....and one I still listen to probably monthly 13 years later.
listened to Either/Or for the first time today – another stunner! I don't know much about Elliot Smith but he kinda gave me a low-fi Beatles vibe? if that's possible?
him and Brion were two of the more prominent beatles-heads of that era I feel like updated the list through page 10. some shakeups in the last few lists. hounds of love is no longer #2. I'll leave it at that for now.
I have a strange appreciation for Elliot Smith in that I think Either/Or is absolutely phenomenal and yet none of his other albums do anything for me at all. I do like a few individual songs (Waltz, Miss Misery, Needle in the Hay).
I definitely hear a lot of Beatles in the sort of “orchestral” playing on Elliott’s records. He creates a depth of sound that is a lot like John/Paul’s songwriting.
Heatmiser is great too. Need to shout out Jimmy Eat World for name dropping them in “Kill” and lead me on the path to dive into Elliott Smith’s discography.
Tangential, but this post made me think of it: Have you heard Live at the Star Club, Hamburg? Given how much of your 50 is driven by raucous energy and ferocity, I feel like it’d be right up your alley.
i remember it being in my parents record collection. probably a handful of times but it’s been forever. i’ll check it out again
