There... isn’t a problem? Lmao. I’m not trying to be antagonistic or disagree with your post. I think you are correct, but I wanted to add some thoughts detailing where I think that recency bias might come from.
you’re getting more mad that i said it’s surprising a six song EP from two years ago is on someone’s top 50 all time list than people did when i said i didn’t like fleetwood mac, my worst opinion online. reconsider that.
Yeah, it definitely wasn’t meant to be. I just wanted to talk about it! It is really interesting, now that you’ve mentioned it, how many users on the site have been able to avoid (for lack of a better word) the older stuff that’s out there while others have a better balance.
i think it’s just personal preference. people find a scene/vibe/subgenre that they latch onto and they run with it. phoebe and lucy are great and i love their music and their EP. being surprised it ended up on an all time list someone turned into a negative statement because ??? reasons?? people have bad reading comprehension online, i guess?
Here's the thing: it's never too late to explore. I didn't listen to soul music or hip-hop until late in high school. Didn't listen to anything pre-rock (Sinatra, Belafonte, Sammy Davis) until college Didn't listen to country regularly until my mid-to-late-20s. Didn't get into jazz or anything in Spanish or Portuguese until the last few years. There's great music in every genre for the last 100+ years. Don't get stuck in one little corner. I promise it's exciting.
using weezer as some sort of counter/dunk was pretty funny considering, as @cshadows2887 pointed out, they are on over a quarter of the lists submitted lol
Honestly it's partially selfish. I get legit tangible joy out of introducing people to something they like.
it's also possible for a soul or hip-hop or country or jazz album released in the year 2020 to be better than, or to affect you more than, an album released in 1973, or whenever. it's a weird argument!
That is possible. But on the flip side, statistically, what are the odds that in the 70 year history of a genre, all the best ones are bunched up in one chronological timeframe? As long as you're listening to it all, then love what you love and prefer what you prefer.
For sure. I mean, putting that EP on a list like this doesn’t personally surprise me, but my list is the epitome of recency bias and staying in a particular musical lane lol. I get why others would think it’s odd. I also just think we (meaning everyone on this site) don’t always take enough time to parse tone and end up interpreting others posts in the most negative possible way. I’m 100% guilty of this and it’s gotten me in a lot of stupid arguments.
As I’ve said before, I’m thankful for this project in part because it’s allowed me to create a “to listen” playlist full of classic albums and artists I’m unfamiliar with and show up on people’s lists. I’ve been listening to Joni Mitchell and it’s incredible.
Just want to chime in and say albums released in recent years can still be considered classics or albums people fall in love with (Fetch The Bolt Cutters, Stranger In The Alps, Sprained Ankle, Boygenius, Historian, etc.) and I don't think when they were released should matter. Some artists just release albums that are that good upon release.
If this project gets users repping Joni the way the rep Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac... well then it was all worth it!!
I’m only in her first few albums but they are genuinely stunning. And I hear her style in so much of the music I like.
I agree - regency bias is obviously real but one fun thing about listing is that you can reevaluate over the years and see what sticks. Totally - I remember hearing Blue for the first time and thinking it reminded me of all these modern artists like Taylor Swift and Dashboard Confessional and Phoebe, but also Mike Kinsella. She’s one of those musicians whose legacy extends far beyond people who directly cite her as an influence imo. Plus Prince loved her so she is automatically god tier.

I think the most recent release I included was the Clairo album and more people should listen to it imho
Haven’t had much time to listen to albums from lists I haven’t heard but I’m driving across the country next week and am saving a bunch of these to listen to on the drive
