Nothing Left to Lose and City of Black & White are both records I really love, and they're both pretty different. Young Love is a lot of fun too. He kind of loses me after that, but I recommend his earlier material. It seems like he really reconnected with some of his older work on the acoustic tour he just did, so maybe that will bring a more stripped-down approach on the next album. Or maybe quarantine will do that. Seems possible. I've only listened to the Lyle record in your avatar, but I definitely enjoyed it. Need to spend more time with his work.
those are good points, I’m actually more hopeful now. and nice glad you liked it. I feel like that one's theme of being in suspension is prescient for this era we’ve all been shuttered in. I’m sure when the time is right you’ll be drawn to The Native Genius among other stuff. I love the LA sprawl of the deluxe version for that one. the songs are just so strong, and its arc of the surrender of egoic ambition to a more humble yet devoted participant in the infinite play and “One Big Love” (along with falling in love!) helped me a lot when I needed it. ironically after that Tyler's synthwave band The Midnight blew up. don’t know if you’ve listened to them. I definitely prefer his solo stuff, but there are still some great songs in there. like I could see you being so down with “Prom Night” off their most recent release as an example
I'll hopefully get around to doing mine this week. Kinda feel a bit embarrassed it's mostly male dominated acts from the last 15 years and it's not the most diverse, but going to put a lot of the other albums people have posted on a list and progressively work my way through it.
Absolutely. That's the most exciting part of this whole enterprise. Will definitely be listening to some of these very soon.
Don't feel bad about what your favorites are. You can't really control that. What you can control is what you give your time and your ear to. As long as you keep listening to/supporting varied and diverse stuff, that's all you can ask, imo.
Agree 100% I felt the same way when looking through my CD collection and making my list. Just have to accept people have been fed white male artists, placed on pedestals as the 'best' and 'most important' musicians, for most of history. Almost all black music was until recently treated as 'niche' (apart from MJ and Prince basically) at least where I live in Australia. Almost all female music was treated as pop and therefore 'less important' than that made by white guys -- even when those white guys were making pop music too. Let's not overlook the fact many of us came from the AbsolutePunk days which generally means we grew up on pop-punk, not exactly a haven for diverse artists. The praise for so many white male acts is completely justified. My list is full of such acts and I adore them and their music. As a SWM it kind of makes sense that I'd connect with many of these artists, especially through my formative years. I have only more recently started making a concerted effort to get into more diverse artists, and have found that incredibly rewarding. But for the most part these artists and albums are new to me, which makes it difficult for many to unseat my favourites which have been in rotation for years. So I had to just accept my list would not be as diverse as I'd have liked. I would hope and expect that if we did this exercise again in five or 10 years, I'd have more POC and women on my list. Until then the best I (we) can do is to just give these artists a fair shot and be richer for the experience.
And again. This is the top 2% of what I OWN. Let alone what I’ve heard. Even during the less enlightened days of AP.net I had a strong preference for female fronted music, to the point where I actually took some (fairly gentle) crap for it. That doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily occupy an even half of such a tiny percentage.
That was the point. It's such a small sampling for anyone. To assume it reflects the breadth or diversity of their taste is statistically nuts.
I kind of want to do this too. Is there a final day we can agree on so I can maybe go back to my post and edit it before then?
Fuck. This is gonna be difficult to rank them. I’ve kinda been going back and forth between nostalgia/formative listening experiences and how much I enjoy the album today. I feel like some of the really important ones that I don’t really care to listen to now need to be weighted in some way even though I may not enjoy them as much. Looking forward to working on this, I was just thinking about how this community is the only place I see this type of thing happen.

On @phaynes12 ’s list, I checked out Nowhere by Ride. They’d been a band I’ve known by reputation for a while, and had been meaning to listen to them, and fully expected to enjoy it. It didn’t disappoint, though my first impressions was that it reminded me more of The Stone Roses at times than I was anticipating, not that that’s a bad thing or anything, just had a slightly different idea of what they sounded like in my head! The guitar tones were fantastic, and the drumming was brilliant, and I really enjoyed the bits where the songs got proper noisy. A great listen, and one I’ll definitely be back to.
