Ok, at second glance,I agree with @JRGComedy and some of you aren’t getting points. Lol There are some legit good songs in here…wtf
The way some of y'all get so worked up about Justin Vernon is how I feel about songs longer than like five minutes on a 21-track playlist lmao I love Iron & Wine, I like that song a lot, but the audacity of piling a 10-minute track on here...
This round was hard for me because if I don’t like something musically I don’t tend to pay attention to the lyrics. So then I considered artists whose lyrics I love and tried to find my least favorites by them, but that didn’t really feel right because I either didn’t have a clear “least favorite” or I would’ve had to choose something from an album I never really gave the time of day.
I LIKE Iron & Wine, I really do, in general. I've NEVER cared for that song.... I started the playlist, got bored a minute in, went to start a load of laundry and dishes, had a quick snack downstairs, came back up and there was STILL 2 mins left of the same strumming and rambling. Lol
Well…I have five points leftover and I don’t know how to distribute them. Tough to know how to vote here.
Not surprising to me, because I am definitely a music-first person. I'm going to try to take a little longer with this playlist than usual to make sure I really am getting the lyrics and story, even if I don't like the song, which fits the prompt to me
I considered a few songs from those early Wonder Years records where it seems like Dan is just yelling, everyone else in the band is trying to cram as much of their instrument into the song as possible, and there's just way too much going on.
I guess my votes for this will be based on 1. whether I like the lyrics and then 2. if I do, whether I like them more than the music*. *When I'm thinking about music here, I'm thinking not just about the instrumentation, but the vocal melody and delivery, the arrangement, and not just whether I like the style but whether I think the style is fitting of the lyrics.
The Wonder Years, The Dangerous Summer, and Spanish Love Songs complete the trifecta of beloved-on-Chorus bands that have great lyrics with music that generally bores the hell out of me. But I knew I couldn’t pick any of them since most disagree. edit: thought about Julien Baker here too
There are a few here where I have the complete opposite thought and am like "no, the music on these songs brings the lyrics to life".
