I'm actually lowkey digging this playlist, as infuriating as some of the production choices are. FWIW, I revisited The Blackest Beautiful a few weeks ago and still really enjoyed it. And ...If I'm the Devil also still holds up really well, there's some cracking songs on that record, even if it sacrifices energy for refinement.
I thought this , too! Like .... ok fair enough if you don't like how it sounds, and I'm not too well versed with Hovvdy , but - to whoever submitted it, they warned you in the title with "Demo" lol
Also pretty sure this is a rare example where I need 3-4 full listens to the playlist before being able to feel good about voting. Good thing this one is enjoyable despite the questionable at times production choices.
I am once again going to bat for how that demo sounds, lol. Probably because I love the song, but I love the hearing that song in a raw state and think it sounds relatively clean
The prompt is "great songs with bad production". That's a good song with bad production! What do you want from me!
It’s a demo. Every demo sounds “off”. (I’m not using the word bad for because it’s not always the case but yeah…)
I went into it in my comment, but I get where espo is coming from because the album version of that song proves how held back it is by the constraints of the demo. No it was likely not intended to sound “good”, but it certainly does the song no favors. It’s made better with different production
I was listening to the GBV song and was like, this is a pretty cool song (sounds horrid), why have I never dove into them. Quick jump over to wikipedia, THIRTY NINE studio albums?@!?!??!
HAHAHA - yeah man, it's daunting. Honestly I don't think I mentioned in my comment, but I've been kind of "out" on them since the reunion in 2012. A lot of very same-y sounding stuff, and it feels to me like he's just churning out album after album, quantity over quality if that makes sense. There's sooooo much good stuff on everything '04 and earlier, though. This sounds weird for a band with literally ZERO hits - but their best-of compilation is really a great entry point, a really fun listen that I'd recommend. 32 songs crammed into the classic 80-minute CD runtime lol. Def! I’d be curious your take on the re-recorded “game of pricks” that’s on there as well, since you noted that you liked the song despite it sounding horrid.
My choice isn’t doing as well as I thought it would but the production also isn’t terrible so maybe that’s why.
About my Charly Bliss pick: It was so hard to think of an album I like with bad production, haha. I think Guppy's production is fine for the most part, but in my ears I hear a hint of muddiness here and there. Maybe it's just me, but yeah....still a great album nonetheless!
Damn, I've got a few to pick from for the next round. The ones that feel poignant are also bummers, though.
