Ebon-E is a Dutch singer that was active in the 00s, he did some Dutch songs and did some hooks for rappers and also put out some English songs, like this one. It was my jam back then but it wasn’t a hit or anything. Much later, in college, I met a Zimbabwean girl that told me that this was an enormous - like generational - hit in Zimbabwe when she was in high school. Amazing story.
It’s amusing how much range there is in taste here, even within a single category like “beach music.” Some great stuff here that would totally fit my own playlist, but then again some other stuff that would never cross my mind. And I’m not mad about it either.
Okay a little mad about that Slayyyter track, so thank “GODDD” for the medicinal qualities of Orchestra Baobab and Steely Dan right afterward. I think Best Coast has us fully back on track though I’m still recovering.
I definitely felt like I had 4-5 different sonic directions to go in for this round, depending on which friends/beach/time I imagined myself with haha.
