I put something in just to make sure I have a submission but might switch. To be sure, a band calling back to its own song would count, right?
prompt says "another", but I would probably let it slide. I picked a ridiculous one, but there's a release from this year that's been very popular on this site that I think would also be a very solid choice.
If somebody did gangbusters with a bass solo in the last round, I think it would be fair play to pick a self-referential song if it's a banger enough choice. Related: I'm real curious to know what song this might be!
I initially chose Konstantine by Something Corporate before changing. Also considered Skin Deep by Real Friends...which also namechecks Jimmy Eat World. I'm sensing a pattern.
I initially submitted "I Want to Save You" and got the warning that someone had already submitted a SoCo song. Figured it was "Konstantine." I ended up changing my pick too, and we still ended up with an Andrew McMahon song on the playlist.
So I messed up and didn't add a comment with my submission, but in my song ("Synesthesia" by Andrew McMahon) the lines "And my friends are in the news / Collecting trophies for the songs they wrote / While we lived in the shadow of the moon" are a reference to fun. who Andrew took out on their first tour in the fall/winter of 2008 and were at the time receiving accolades for "We Are Young" and the Some Nights album. The other song I was considering was "Dog Problems" by The Format, which references "The First Single" with the line "When I said 'I hate what I've become', I lied, I hated who I was", and also briefly considered "Anthology" by Thrice which reference a whole bunch of their songs. I of course considered "A Praise Chorus" but already submitted that in this league. There were at least 3 Touche Amore songs I considered that weren't the one submitted here. "We've Had Enough" by Alkaline Trio, "Easy Target" and "Josie" by blink-182 (referencing Social Distortion and Unwritten Law & Dance Hall Crashers, respectively), "1000 Times A Day" by The Early November, which references blink-182 (specifically Dude Ranch), Millencolin, and Choking Victim, and "Everything Is Alright" by Motion City Soundtrack, which references Limbeck with the "Hi, everything's great! Hey, everything's fine!" background vocals. Also considered "737" by Foxing that references every track on that album in the last verse. So many to choose from here!
This was my first pick but it ended up not being on Spotify. My backup was El Scorcho, which one of you already claimed! Ended up with something I’m happy with but for awhile I was pretty stumped
And that's not to mention bands like Gatsbys American Dream and The Wonder Years that have self-referential lyrics all over the place.
