Alien Ant Farm, Jimmy, Fastball, Fetty Wap, Minnie Riperton, Pulp, CRJ. Sure, they have one song more popular than others, but I don’t know a world where any are considered one hit wonders edit: Fine I’ll give you MR, I must just play Les Fleurs a lot
If you don't think Fetty Wap or AAF are one hit wonders.... Whooof this convo isn't going anywhere haha
679 played at a wedding I was at this month. The dance floor was packed. My students know it. It’s a hit!
Nearly every one-hit wonder has another single that achieved some level of success. I think artists with one huge hit and no other songs that people might be aware of is too narrow of a requirement. The curated OHW playlist on YouTube Music includes Snow Patrol, P.O.D., Fuel, and Vertical Horizon, all of which had multiple massive songs IMO. Seems like the widely accepted criteria is not terribly strict.
I almost picked modest mouse but didn’t. It’s also a tough round cause a lot of one hit wonders were for a reason.
Where else can I be pedantic about what a “one hit wonder” means than on a niche music forum’s niche music app’s game thread?
Modest Mouse DEF a one hit wonder, Ocean Breathes Salty is literally the only other song I know by them haha
The thing with one hit wonders is that it’s a cultural thing, not stats based. Technically every band on that list has had more than one “hit” technically speaking, but you ask the average person on the street what CRJs second biggest song was, you’re getting blank stares.
Then you’ve also got location. What were hits in the UK sometimes don’t even bother the charts in the US. Dexys Midnight Runners is always a good example. Come on Eileen was big in the US when it came out, but in the UK, they had 4 songs that reached the top 10 with Geno reaching number 1 too.
I think there's a difference between a one-hit wonder and a band with one huge single which helped them build a steady, long-lasting and productive career off the back of it. Listening to that American Authors song reminded me of Foster the People, and made me regret not choosing Helena Beat for my pick.
Yeah the thing with Modest Mouse is sure, they may have only had one real “hit”. But they have several all time classic albums and are incredibly influential. So it’s not like that one hit is the only relevant thing they ever did lol.
Yeah they already had a decent following and then just built upon that after float on. Dashboard was also a decent sized hit for them.
Lol, saw them on the Wiki list but sorry pals, "Dashboard" and subsequent lead singles have gotten plenty of alternative radio play. Definitely would not consider them (or Jimmy Eat World, or Carly Rae Jepsen) one hit wonders lol
See this is insane, that was a single but most people would recognize SEVERAL other Modest Mouse songs from a number of albums before that one. It's not even the second most-popular song on that album lol I almost went with "Eyes Wide Open" (great song) but I'm pretty sure it's a repeat from another round
The singer from American Authors gave a friend of a friend chlamydia lol (I have permission to tell people/joke about it)
To me a true one hit wonder didn't have a real career aside from that song (or the album it was on). If you had a real career as an album artist you are not a one hit wonder, even if you had only one hit song.
I do think y’all are overrating Modest Mouse’s pre-Float On popularity haha I’ve seen them live too, so it’s not like I haven’t tried to get into them
