Trailers bad because there was an old couple in my showing who seemed to actually think it was a lighthearted dramedy and laughed at inappropriate times (not in a fucked up way, ie. during the flashbacks or anything, haha, just in tense slow parts)

 

i did not care for this outside of oscar one bit

 

bullshit that this ain’t playing at my regal

 

I thought this was playing locally but I guess it was pulled. I might have to see it before I go home tomorrow.

it was nice seeing Oscar Isaac in most violent year mode and he and Tiffany were great together
I can tell this past year and a half has fucked with my brain because I wanted to go to those seedy casinos so badly
the soundtrack sounded so much like Drive at times it was distracting
I can't believe a poker player being named William Tell is the least insane thing about this movie
do you think Asian people playing poker is a real stereotype or is Paul just so weird and racist that he made it up

the Abu Ghraib stuff was just uncomfortable for shock value's state, Will could have easily done fictional war crimes in a fictional war and the general point would remain the same

also transactionally having sex as a handshake deal is super fucked up

 

This ruled but everyone else in my theater seemed to be there based on the trailer selling them a dramedy about a card counter and boy were they pissed

 

Man, this film is a trip

 

All I knew about the movie was the title and the director. It is great that he was able to sneak in a real exploration of trauma and guilt into a story about gambling.

I also liked the idea that it is called The Card Counter but the vast majority of the cards being played are in poker.

 

you “can” count cards for poker. it just is more percentages of your odds to win vs. knowing what the next card to come up will be

Movie was so weird. Like a casino version of Drive or something. The USA USA USA card player's role was just... wtf/why/unnecessary.

 

Wow this was truly great. I haven’t been this drawn into a movie since Uncut Gems. Whoever was in charge of the marketing for this needs to find a new line of work.

 

This was just okay? Tiffany Haddish was miscast.
