I know you’re probably not looking for a real answer. But I’m sure this was an incredibly fun shoot even if the end result is one of the worst comedies I’ve seen recently

Is it so bad that it's entertaining to watch still or is just bland as fuck

I mean, for the leads that tracks. But Daisy is in one scene (so far, I got bored and stopped to take a shower and have the second half to get through now) and it’s basically just to be someone that Pedro’s character want to fuck. Just feels below her to me. Maybe I’m just still just in love with her based on TFA and TLJ and want better for her.

What's such a bummer is to see the 3 big American comedy filmmakers of the 2000s all collapse like this.

Todd Phillips, Adam McKay have decided to become "serious directors" and Apatow was the one out of them who has continued to make comedies. I really liked The King of Staten Island, so I was rooting for him here, but clearly he's become another one of those guys that just needs to LOG OFF TWITTER for the love of god.

The Bubble feels like something that would have aired on tv/netflix back during the height of the pandemic in 2020, but now its like please just stop

Yeah that’s a fair point for sure. Her American accent was weird to hear hahaha

Yea it was, wasn’t it? I wonder why they bothered with it for such a short moment.

I wonder if I’m the first person to say that a lot of the performances feel phoned in. I’m very clever and original.

I think they all got bad cases of Rich Guy Brain where they have to “make a statement” about something. I’m sure in Judd’s mind he thought this would be a “America, you have permission to laugh” movie.

One of the many problems with this is it’s impossible to buy “Cliff Beasts” as something people are seeing, even in a fictional world. The joke is that they’re vapid, poorly written blockbusters, but what we’re shown is something that looks like an even shittier Syfy movie. Why not just make the joke that they’re all working-class actors that have to do this movie because they need to get work and this is all that’s out there?

I haven't seen War Dogs but I think it's weird to group together McKay and Todd Phillips together, but I think Phillips is doing okay with his Golden Lion

And McKay has an oscar for best adapted screenplay. My point being is I hate the movies they have decided to make lol

They are all in a position to get actual comedies made again and choose projects like this... At least Apatow is producing Bros for Nicholas Stroller and Billy Eichner

I’d be curious to see if the people involved in the Tim Robinson cinematic universe would be able to make a feature length.

Does… does Judd think the last scene is a legitimate defense of this movie?

was Todd Phillips ever funny, I think the fact that I have to remember every single time that he didn't direct Wedding Crashers disputes that

Farrelly Brothers might be a better one because they made a bunch of classics and then nothing of value

The cameos in here are grating too. Kate McKinnon is given nothing to do and if she’s improv-ing then yikes. I feel bad for Daisy Ridley. Maria Bamford looks like she doesn’t even know what movie she’s in. And Beck - just why?

I will admit to liking Road Trip, Old School and the first Hangover movie (Phillips has many misses) but the point being he was a filmmaker making successful comedies regardless of subjective quality. And his wild success with Joker and the Hangover trilogy should put him in a better position to get a blank check to make anything, but i'm sure he'll just do Joker 2 since he clearly loves a hefty pay check (can't blame him).

Mid-budget movies were taken away from us when studios realized they could make billions overseas with giant $150M extravaganzas after Avatar's insane success in 2009 - which essentially killed the studio comedy as this mid-budget range was their playing field.

Jay Roach is also another one who was making comedies but ended up deciding to make a "statement" with his political movies. However, this turn did not work out anywhere near as well for him as it did for McKay or Phillips. (jfc Bombshell is way worse than anything the others made)

Man, I forgot about Jay Roach. It's a shame about the mid-budget comedy. I feel like Netflix is trying to keep it alive and they have had a couple that have been good ("Always Be My Maybe," "Dolemite Is My Name," "Set It Up"), but it's also a lot of cheaply-looking stuff like this. I'm glad there are a few still that haven't been McKay-pilled, like The Lonely Island, Nicholas Stoller and Jake Kasdan. But yeesh, it's grim.

Booksmart, Lady Bird and Blockers were all great but it's definitely rare that comedies get studio releases now
