  3. Also wasn’t it WB? Pretty sure most of them are losing their jobs regardless of this

I have no idea what being "fired" here would mean but I get the feeling the studio will take the blame for generally mismanaging the project more than Maggie G will take a career hit for making a flop. She's well-liked and well-connected, and I suspect the movie will live on with a certain notoriety that will outlast most other things you can currently see in a theater.

I'm not at all surprised Vera Drew is a fan - at times the movie has the idiosyncratic energy and lack of focus-grouping of a much smaller production.

I doubt she'll get a huge budget again anytime soon (though I imagine said budget was inflated by the post-production woes) but I suspect she'll have another Lost Daughter-scale production coming down the line before long.

I didn't love a lot of it as i said, but it's wild how many people just flat out hated it and couldn't buy in at all. It's not like it's a traditional, serious movie that just fails at every aspect. I don't know, I feel like a lot of options on it are pretty harsh. It's almost like after 10-15 minutes, people couldn't adjust their expectations to judge the movie they're watching, instead they seem to be grappling with trying to compare it to what they thought it'd be, or what a more conventional telling of the bride of Frankenstein would be. Not trying to get all pretentious and suggest people can't dislike things but it seems like the type of movie that should be a 'not for me' movie. vs refund worthy, worst movie ever piece of trash.

I really didn't like Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die but I recognized that while it was a mess and a disastrous waste of the premise for me, it obviously had value for some who could buy into the absurdity and tone they went for.

This is prime material for the critical drinker to attack though so maybe people will flock there with their takes.

I think it's mainly an issue of expectations and marketing. In Variety some suit described it as "elevated horror" which seems totally categorically wrong for it even as a loose marketing term - this lacked the self-seriousness I associate with "elevated" as a descriptor and it is in almost no way a horror movie. Tonally it's closer to something like Poor Things - another "period piece" (but only sorta) with fairy tale logic and adult themes (and a focus on feminism).

Despite the budget and stars this felt more like a quirky excuse to riff on a set of themes and concerns with a super loose genre-adjacent framework than a genre movie per se - sort of like a cuddlier, big-budget version of a Claire Denis movie or something. If you can manage to open your mind and tap into the movie's fuck-it energy and it becomes (mostly) quite enjoyable and even occasionally moving. I imagine if you can't it must quickly become unbearable. Skill issue.

I mean, I’m not surprised at all at the reactions, lol. This is peak “Josh is comically indignant & SpyKi had a good time” cinema.

Which, truly, the movie landscape is better for every one of those films that manages to sneak through.

  11. I have seen way more reactions in line with Josh’s. That is the main takeaway from this movie. I want to see it still but acting like oh that’s just Josh being Josh is disingenuous

Where did I say that it’s just Josh? lol, I’ve referred to this as a movie for sickos. I chose him to mention because I think he’s a fun example of someone who gets mad enough at a movie to be mad at those who like it. And then mentioned SpyKi because he’s one of this forum’s most fun movie sickos.

(Also, I don’t think consensus good or bad should ever be the main takeaway from a movie. Nor should box office or awards or whatever. That’s kinda boring to me. But, I don’t know how much fun going down that route will be, so whatever.)

it wasn't the marketing. i wasn't expecting elevated horror. i thought the trailers looked pretty bad.

what i saw was 2 of the worst lead performances by performers i generally like

the script is bad. it's thin. it's nonsensical.

If there’s anything they did in this, it’s go for it, imo.

I don’t think I have a good enough grasp on your tastes to know if it’ll be your brand of nonsense or not. But yours is the only opinion not shared here yet that I’m eager to hear.

I also think my opinion is skewed on movies these days as I live next door to an AMC (like a literal 4 minute walk). and I have the stubs thing, so it's really not an investment of time or money to just see whatever... OH noooo, I wasted one of my 16 movie tickets a month on something mediocre and got some freash air...

Listen, I have not seen this yet so I could wind up fucking hating it too, but I really don't think I am going into this thinking about things like "themes" or "good acting". The trailer looks like a Wildwood Boardwalk t-shirt, I expect slop and I want slop.
