I listened to some of the Ghibli soundtracks recently. From start to finish, I have to say ‘Boy and the Heron’ is Hisaishi’s best work. Such a great score.

I’m partial to the Spirited Away soundtrack. All of them rule though

Saw Kiki’s last night, maybe my second watch ever. What a wonderful, wise, and warm movie. My wife mentioned it was her favorite Ghibli she’s seen so far.

    It includes
    • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind: Nausicaä with her glider, the Toxic Jungle and a Giant Warrior's skull.
    • Castle in the Sky: Pazu, Sheeta, the cave where they took shelter, and an old Laputian Robot.
    • My Neighbor Totoro: Totoro, the studio's mascot, along with Satsuki and some Soot Sprites;
    • Kiki's Delivery Service: Kiki, Jiji, and the bakery, one of the most recognizable locations in the film.
    • Princess Mononoke: Ashitaka, San, her cave with Moro resting on it, and several Kodama.
    • Spirited Away: Chihiro, No-Face, a buildable dragon form of Haku, the Sea Railway, and the entrance to the Spirit Realm, which hides the piggery and several rooms from the bathhouse, where you can spot some side characters from the film.
    • Howl's Moving Castle: Howl, Sophie, Turnip Head, and of course the titular castle, including some of its interior rooms.

My wife and I watched Grave of the Fireflies last night at an AMC theater as part of Ghibli Fest.

What an utterly gut-wrenching, harrowing, beautiful film. The whole audience was weeping at the end. My wife says it was probably the saddest movie she’s ever seen.

I bought the recent Blu-ray release and I'm nervous to put it on, haha.

On my way to better things Moderator

    It’s a beautiful film. I didn’t cry though

  11. A perfect film that I will probably never watch again.

  12. The Music Box here in Chicago ran a Ghibli series back in late June/early July and I saw SO MANY of them and it was magical, I watched (in order):

    Only Yesterday [first time]
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind [35mm]
    Princess Mononoke [35mm]
    Kiki's Delivery Service [35mm]
    Pom Poko
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro [midnight showing]
    Porco Rosso
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya [first time]
    Ponyo [35mm]
    Howl's Moving Castle [35mm]
    Spirited Away [35mm]
    Castle in the Sky [35mm]

Sadly no Totoro or Boy and the Heron during the series to round out Miyazaki (presumably a rights thing with Fathom Events for their Ghibli Fest). Couldn't convince myself to go to Grave of the Fireflies and was straight up unable to go to The Wind Rises (which I've already seen in a theater, thankfully).

I know it’s heartbreaking, but it honestly is worth seeing again to pick up on the subtleties. It’s such a deeply human film and unfortunately all too relevant now.

    Only Yesterday rules.

still need to catch Lupin and Porco Rosso.

  15. Yeah, I watched it for the first time this year so the relevance was... well it made it hurt even more than it otherwise would've. I will almost definitely watch again at some point, it was just too soon this time around.

Porco is a gem, one of Miyazaki's best for my money.

That’s interesting as that’s definitely one you don’t hear enough discussion about. I’ve actually really enjoyed checking out the underrated ones lately. It feels like neither filmmaker has ever made a misstep, but even the non-Miyazaki/Takahata ones are great.

I still need to check out the following:

    Porco Rosso
    Whisper of the Heart
    My Neighbors the Yamadas
    The Cat Returns
    Tales from Earthsea
    From Up on Poppy Hill
    When Marnie Was There
    The Red Turtle
    Ocean Waves

would also love to check out these pre-Ghibli/Ghibli-adjacent films and shows I haven’t caught yet:

    Horus, Prince of the Sun
    Heidi, Girl of the Alps
    Lupin III
    Future Boy Conan
    Anne of Green Gables
    Gauche the Cellist
    Ronja the Robber’s Daughter
3000 Leagues in Search of Mother

  18. I think my remaining Ghibli films are just:
    Tales from Earthsea
When Marnie Was There (I feel like I've seen this one but I don't remember much about it if I have)
    The Red Turtle
    Ocean Waves

Just had this experience at a local theater near me. I was crying maybe the entire time? The interview with the director after only made me sob harder

This along with Never Ending Man and Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron are all great. Would love to see them all really. There are a few others that are harder to find—there’s a series called 10 Years with Miyazaki, one about Takahata’s making of Princess Kaguya, one about the making of Princess Mononoke, one about Miyazaki’s fascination with flight, and another about the ever-present theme of nature within Ghibli works.

Our whole theater was crying. It was amazing.
