It was a weird one to leave off. Especially since it would have made for an even 10 albums in the rankings.
I must be the only one that really likes Ghosts on the Boardwalk. The title track, Big Eyes, Like The Sun, Gasoline, and the chill slow songs in the middle, such a great record. He probably puts it last because it wasn't meant to be a full length. Let's keep the Souls talk going, I'm going to try to rank my favorite ten Souls songs (almost impossible): I'm From There Midnight Mile Night on Earth Ghosts On the Boardwalk Gone Kids & Heroes Letter From Iraq The Day I Turned My Back On You Lamar Vannoy Sing Along Forever
They are truly the best band, they were awesome last night. Can't wait to do it again tonight! Also the VIP is 100% worth it if anyone is thinking about it
I've been tracking the setlist for the shows on this run and I am really loving the breakdown! One of the benefits of being into punk bands (versus, say, a band like Metallica or Radiohead) is that the length of the songs is brief enough that they can put a setlist together that represents their full career in a way that feels deep (versus just playing the "hits" from each record or whatever). Glad you enjoyed the VIP too! What acoustic songs did they do? LOL I didn't pick up on that! I just saw it posted today somewhere, got excited, and shared. Oops...
I realllly like what Anti-Flag did on this tour given their 45 minute set allowment. Won't spoil it, but this show was so much fun the other night and I finally got to see Souls & Anti-Flag play the 950 cap Ballroom instead of the 400 cap club they sell out every time they're here.
VIP: Favorite Everything Highway Kings For All The Unheard Gone Kate Better Days Better Life Better Things Back to Better They basically did all requests except the first 2, I was a little annoyed people asked for Gone and Kate since obviously they were gonna play those later lol Someone yelled out for Better Things and then someone else said Better Days so they decided to do a better block and do their "tetralogy" of better songs which was awesome
Man last night was also great, lot of setlist swaps (they did the better block in the set). Love this band so much Also got them to do Bryans Lament at the VIP!
currently about halfway through Anchors Aweigh, and i think so far this is the first one i've really been into the entire time. Romantic and Summer Vacation were both good though. I don't know what I expected them to sound like but it wasn't as punk as it is. Really digging it. I guess I thought it would sound more like early Gaslight or something.
Yeah, overall, it is definitely a more accessible Lifetime and Token Entry kind of a Jersey sound from Maniacal through Anchors. After that they start bringing other things into the sound. But I think at their core, those are two of the big ones.
It’s a forgotten Rise record. No clear reason bc I believe Simplicity was on Rise and is available. Edit: it is on Spotify and YouTube though. Definitely give it a listen sometime. It’s a good record that came out at a weird time for punk music.
Highly recommend seeking out The Bouncing Souls / Anti-Flag split that is not on streaming. Some of both bands best work
Very true. All of those BYO splits are honestly really good. Comet era Souls will always be cool bc the album is good, they recorded it with Bill Stevenson, and they took out The Menzingers on tour when they were on their OTIP run. While @JaytotheGee and I didn’t attend the show together, I can only assume he walked out with a ton of merch like my brother and I did.
At the acoustic pre-show thing tonight, Greg mentioned they'd be releasing a second acoustic album in 2024 (working title is "Volume 2, Volume 2"). They also mentioned they'd be doing a "songs we don't usually play live" tour in 2024 but... It was hard to tell if it was a joke or sincere on account of Greg's usual tone. EDIT: This was also one of the cooler line-ups I've seen, top to bottom, in a while. So much fun!
i would love a deepcuts tour from every band with a huge discography like green day, but at small clubs for the fans that wanna hear the other stuff other than the radio singles
Jealous you get Strike Anywhere! 7 Seconds were great last night but... Yeah. Hah. The Souls were I forget if you're a fan or not but... Catbite has really levelled up their live show at some point in the last like, 6 months or so. They've always been great but this felt next level with more crowd interaction, etc.
Yeah it's probably too many bands, but I'm also excited to see 7 Seconds have only seen them at Riot Fest briefly. Catbite has definitely gotten better this year have seen them a few times!
