don't mess with my heart. I would seriously do this but I wouldn't even know how to start a book club online lol
Oh yeah, 4 has that particular sequence that's one of the best fantasy back stories I've ever read and 5 is the game changer. The whole series is something unbelievably special. You shouldn't go into that "weaker" section negatively, if you're loving the characters and the world you should just enjoy the ride, I'd absolutely love to be in the position again where I'm reading them for the first time. It was the best.
I've had no energy or interest in reading this month and it's bugging the shit out of me. Maybe I burned myself out in January by reading close to 5,000 pages, or maybe it's working 60 hour weeks and being up 20 hours straight most days, but I cannot get past 20 pages before I'm just out of it and ready for bed. I honestly feel bad - as stupid as that may sound - that I'm not reading more.
I’m currently reading Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan, and I’m not sure if I’m enjoying it. Before this I read Chasing The Scream, which I highly reccommend to anyone with even the slightest interest in the war on drugs. That book was so fascinating that this new one feels like a bit of a let down. It feels like a rebound relationship after a very great one. A 400+ page rebound.
Don't feel bad, I went through not being interested in reading anything for like 5 years and then moved on to comics/graphic novels and now I'm reading books constantly. I've always seen it as cyclical for me, maybe you're just in a rut atm
Finished up They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us this week after seeing the rec in this thread and it was definitely interesting. Something different from my usual tastes
I got this for my birthday a few weeks ago after seeing it mentioned in here. Very different from my usual tastes as well. Love the cover at least haha.
Part of me wants to average 100 pages a day read and I feel like setting a goal was dumb so I'm gonna cancel that out. Maybe I'm also reading some things that just don't fully interest me along with being in a rut. I actually am really in the mood for fantasy right now. Something to just really escape into so I might jump into The Two Towers, the Stormlight Archive #2 or His Dar Materials #2 next as I have some fantasy trilogies / series to catch up on. I'm also losing free time to my rewatch of The Wire so something's gotta give and wait on the back burner for awhile haha
I know this feeling. I always feel in my mind that I can finish a book per work week while reading before work and during my lunch break and maybe a bit at night before bed but things definitely get out of whack and it starts to stress me out and give me anxiety. Which thinking about sounds silly but alas. So much entertainment and so little time!
Anybody read True Crime? Michelle McNamara's(Patton Oswalt's late wife) book comes out on Tuesday and my wife and I are excited for it
Also, the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy by Liu Cixin might be something you’re looking for. He’s China’s most famous SF writer. The first book in the series called “The Three-Body Problem” won the Hugo award a couple years ago. I’m about to start the 2nd book so can’t comment on the series as a whole but the first book was quite enjoyable.
Barbarian Days is one of the few books I’ve never finished. I think last I checked in my Kindle, I had read like 1/3 of it.
Haha how strange! I really liked the three body problem, looking forward to diving into book #2 tonight. I will say it's a little hard to keep some of the Chinese names straight but luckily there's a list of characters at the start of the book so if you forget it's easy to just take a quick peek.
Is it because you just didn’t enjoy it? I’m debating on stopping or not. I did start to get into it a little bit last night, but I don’t want to waste my time when I could be reading something else.
It was one of those books that I just kept getting distracted during. It's pretty rare that I don't finish books, but I think I have two on my Kindle that I just couldn't pay attention to for whatever reason. I have a stack of books to read right now, but maybe I'll try to finish it up this year haha.
I'm only about 40 pages in since I only got the chance to read on the train but so much has happened already. That list at the start and the notes at the bottom of some of the pages definitely helps though.
