Reading is different for everyone - and different for the same person at different times. Sometimes I read to relax, to feel calm/sleepy, to learn, to improve myself, for a thrill, for a laugh, etc. All books have a purpose!

If you want to read Goosebumps, read Goosebumps. Some of my favorite books are kid books, genre fiction. I appreciate animated movies more than any others. Most years, I've seen maybe one of the movies nominated for awards.

It is what it is. Sometimes I've really enjoyed more literary fiction. I also enjoy cutesy comic books! All reading is good reading.

I highly recommend seeking out Your Fathers, Where Are They? It's a very quick read but I connected with it deeply. His last one, Heroes of the Frontier is excellent. Hologram is also great and I refuse to watch the film adaptation of it to not sour my fondness haha

What are some of your favorite Comics?

One of my favorite series is the Lumberjanes - it's so cute and positive, and I love the style. I also read Nimona, which was done by one of the people who work on Lumberjanes, and liked it as well. (Sidenote, I saw something about a movie being made?? Not sure.) Also, I am like the biggest fan of Peanuts. So relatable.

The three main webcomics that I really love and follow are Check, Please! (funny hockey boys), Sharp Zero (diverse cast of superheroes!), and Heartstopper (really sweet prep-school love story). All on Tumblr, lol, because that's who I am.

For Christmas I got my first Dean Koontz book - Intensity. Heard nothing but great things about it.

Definitely post about it if you want to! There may be more users like you who don't post much because they don't like / know what others mention who maybe are big Koontz fans or fans of similar works that you and I and others don't know of. I like to think that's what this (and all forums) are for - to find new things and expand horizons!

Hey now. In 2017 I read War and Peace along with 5 Goosebumps books. Both are great :)

Great to hear! Will definitely put those on my "to read" list.

I feel like I won't be buying any books for the next 18 months - have about 116 on my shelf that I want to get to first before buying more stuff. Thankfully Goodreads can remember for me.

Being still so new to books I don't really exclude anything from being read. I read President biographies, Tolstoy, Hemingway, Steinbeck but also Murakami, King, Goosebumps, Harry Potter, comics, Aziz Ansari and Mindy Kaling, Pynchon, murder mystery, true crime, Dickens, Vonnegut, the Dune series, A Song of Ice and Fire... it goes on and on.

Maybe in time my habits will change hope not) but I feel like every book has something worthwhile to present to me.

I should hit 1,000 unique books read by the end of 2020 if I keep up my current place. I can’t remember a bunch I read back in the day, but still. That’s an excitingly high number.

I think this is the right approach, personally. Variety is what makes reading a worthwhile activity.

I haven't read much but if you like The Fireman I know NOS4A2 is great. I just recently read a short story collection of his that was good too.

Also I know you like comics, Locke & Key is phenomenal, get it!

I'm reading Little Women right now and love it so much. It's just really joyful. The March family is so great.

I have always read Fantasy books. LORD, GOT, Sit, Earthsea. This is a broad question but what would anyone recommend for technically a new reader? I'm looking for something extraordinarily out the box, even romantic, but I'm open to all kinds. Even your favourite recently!

My forever recommendation: Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s Shadow of the Wind.

Murakami might work for you. Something like A Wild Sheep Chase, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Dance Dance Dance, Hard Boiled Wonderland. He has a very quirky, unusual world that blends a bit of fantasy in a real world setting.

Not a recommendation but can I assume by your username that you're a fan of the Kingkiller Chronicles? :) My sister loves those books and she's reading the first one out loud to my husband and I at the moment. We're close to the end now. It's a loooooong book.

Thanks for the recommendations so far!!

I am! Probably would be my favourite series if it ever gets finished..... the first book does drag towards the end but it leads to the second book which opens up a LOT more and is my favourite of the 2 main titles released so far.

It's definitely really interesting! My only criticism is I think it could've used quite a bit more editing... Certain passages, even pages at a time that don't really add much to the story, you know? But I really like all the characters and the world building!

I completely am in line with this whole statement, except I didn’t finish Infinite Jest. Once I started reading more I thought I’d tackle that book because it has so much hype. I was struggling though and frankly just wasn’t enjoying it. I felt like I couldn’t quit though because that would mean I was dumb or something. I was talking to a friend of mine about it and he just told me, “if you don’t enjoy it, just stop”. So, I did. Haha.

Since then I have enjoyed reading so much more. Been bouncing back and forth between fiction and non-fiction for the last 2 years and it’s been great.

These are a couple of my go to recommendations. Shantaram is long but I figured if you like fantasy long books don’t scare you.

Oh yeah, usually I’m of that mindset too but there were a lot of sections and concepts I really enjoyed. While others made absolutely no sense to me and made my eyes glaze over. So it was a weird balance. Overall I’m glad I finished it, and I feel some sense of accomplishment but I’ll definiteky be getting back to my wheelhouse a bit.
