After never reading more than 2-3 books a year (if that) through high school and most of college, I finally made a leap in 2016 and read about 8 or so. In 2017 a switched flipped and I finished about 31 different titles (a few comics and audiobooks included). Honestly this year has been super rewarding and I finally really fell in love with reading.

With that said I’ve spent the last 2 and 1/2 months reading Infinite Jest and it kicked my ass. I just finished it this afternoon and while I grasped the basics of what was happening, the majority of the meaning flew right past my head. One of the most interesting, but frustrating experiences.

My next read is either going to be Meet Me In The Bathroom or Heavier Than Heaven, that Kurt Cobain biography. Has any one read the latter?

Enjoyed it immensely, loved the time period, was obsessed with Napoleon for a bit while reading. The only difficult part for me was the first war campaign that's in the first 200 pages or so, I spent forever on it, too many military people to keep track of. But once I got past that, it was great.

I always feel weird in this thread cuz most of the talk is about books I've never heard of and don't seem interesting to me and I realize that most people don't read anything remotely close to what I do hah!

It does often seem that this thread revolves around more literary fiction than genre fiction. Which isn’t a bad thing, just an observation.

Which may be why genre fiction has kinda migrated to other threads, but more specialized by authors.

I’m halfway thru You Shall Know Our Velocity! and I’m really enjoying it. I wish I hadn’t waited so long to finally read it.

i really enjoyed this, and i've enjoyed the three works i've read by Eggers. he seems to be very love / hate among fans / readers, but i really like and connect with his writing style. although i did feel A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius was about twice as long as it should have been, i still enjoyed it and the world Eggers painted. The Circle was also very, very good although nothing really groundbreaking.

The only other Eggers I’ve read is What is the What, but I’m definitely planning on going through his bibliography after I finish Velocity. I’m a big fan of his style. I’m excited to read Staggering Genius and Zeitoun.

What's the difference between Genre/Literary? I've always just seen things as Fiction or Non-Fiction.

I'm not mad about it or anything it's just funny to me that most here are reading things WAY above my level. Like I might as well be reading fucking Goosebumps haha

Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Romance, Horror, YA (kinda—it has all the same subsidies as adult literature), Mysteries, etc.

Literary: usually nominated for Pulitzers/classics—think of things like To Kill a Mockingbird or anything by Steinbeck.

Of course, something can be both. But there’s a tradition of looking down on genre fiction that has continued in the canon of literature for centuries.

This makes sense. I guess I'm just more interested in the former then. Although Mockingbird is one if my favorites I just haven't read it in years.
