I’ve had one friend read The Secret History and she hated it so much it’s the most passionate I’ve ever heard her rage about a book, haha. I’ve not read it.

I’ve got about 90 minutes left of the audiobook of The Goldfinch and it’s heartbreaking. It also shouldn’t really work but it does somehow. It works very well.

The Fact of A Body was quite interesting.

Different than other non-fiction books I've read, although there haven't been many

not sure what i want to start off 2018 with, so i'll probably do a random number generator to figure it out. my main goal for 2018 is to finish up a lot of trilogies and series that i've either started or have on my shelf that i haven't started and to read at least 20 new* authors.

    * = an author i haven't read before, not necessarily an author that has just been published for the first time

A book I ordered on Thriftbooks (Let It Blurt) shipped about a month ago and just got delivered to some random person in Washington. I'm now bummed that it's even less likely I'll ever receive the book. I emailed Thriftbooks about it (and USPS), but they refunded me a weird amount ($3.43 when the book was $4.19).

This is by far the weirdest experience I've had with ordering a book. The other two shipments for the order arrived just fine but this one has spent a month being sent to different states from my local post office.

My girlfriend wanted me to read something other than Stephen King so I'm reading a book called Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. It's about a school shooting and 100 pages in already pretty damn good. Anyone else read this?

I’m finishing 2017 with 1984 and Brave New World re-reads to reach 80 books.

Aiming for 50 in 2018. My main goal is to fall in love with physical reading again and not just audiobooks. I have some shelves to clear.

Got my mom the Duino Elegies by Rilke. Kind of found it in a weird way but the more I looked into it the more it seemed like something she'd really like. Admittedly, I also got it cuz I wanna read it after she's done too.

Finished The Windfall last night--interesting comedy of manners story that could be really funny.

started Lincoln in the Bardo today--about 50 pages in and it's really cool so far.

Hi I really wanted to talk about meet me in the bathroom by Lizzy Goodman. I just started it in earnest and it's breaking my heart a little

  12. This is in my library and is next on my list after 'Everybody Loves Our Town' by Mark Yarm.

It's kind of weird bc I assume her writing is in whatever questions she asked to spur conversations and then collaging it together for coherence. But you only get that latter part so it's kind of journalistic in a way. Really cool so far though, tag me when you start it bc I'd love to talk about it.

Really loved the book! The interviews were really thorough and I felt that they had a ton of substance to them.

Oh yeah, it's kind of surprising how finely tuned it is to balance that whole shooting the shit vibe but being very informative. Like, I'd never heard of Jonathan Fire*Eater and looking them up doesn't give you even a fraction of the vivid account of them you get in the book. And it'd be one thing if it was just the front people who were well spoken and charismatic, but it seems everyone in here somehow got the gift of gab. The casualness with which the romantic and the terrible will be invoked is really something else.

I'm not even far into this it's just so compelling

Oh yeah, it was certainly unlike anything else I read last year. And as someone who has transcribed interviews before I can only imagine the process for a book like this is super long and tedious.

Hadn't even considered that, or what a pain revisions must've been. But the author clearly has a lot of love for that scene and time in their life and it shows in how carefully crafted it all is. Did you go into it interested in any particular bands? I feel like if the account of a band I'd never even heard of was so palpable that the artists I'm actually invested in will really be something else. I'm interested in seeing the city evolve, too

Oh absolutely. I have no direct ties to the scene, but I majored in Music Industry so books like this just always interest me. I was familiar with some of the bands, but certainly not all of them.

Same, no direct ties to speak of really. My casual reading has definitely dipped in the time since I've started school (I'm an English major, so the burn out happens pretty regularly) but for whatever reason music history type books have been in regular rotation the last couple of years. This one, Our Band Could Be Your Life, Girl in a Band, Your Favorite Band is Killing Me, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl...something about them makes for magnetic reading ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  22. I lovee Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl (and Girl in a Band and Your Fav Band is Killing Me).

also love the way you described Meet Me in the Bathroom--gonna have to check that out for sure!!

have you read any of the 33 1/3 books?

Definitely check it out, I think there's a lot to like if you liked really any of the others mentioned. There's so many different perspectives covered that I can't imagine not finding a single one that meshes.

I haven't but I actually just ordered my first one yesterday on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Do you have good things to say about them? I know that there's really no rules when it comes to these so I really don't know what to expect with it

finished The Long Walk this morning. goddamn, that was super entertaining and so awesome. Easily one of my favorite King novels. I love the way he's able to write characters / conversations and just general camaraderie among kids / people. Really has a way of making them seem like real life, genuine people and not just created for a book.

I remember having to read this in high school for an English class and being mind blown. Great read.
