Got a random Amazon package at my door today and was confused what it was. Turns out I won a Goodreads Giveaway. I never win anything! Anybody else won one?
Yeah I won the very first one I entered (City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg) and then I haven't won one since. But I haven't entered that many, probably 10 or so.
I honestly forgot I entered one and was kinda freaking out as to who ordered me a book and if my son accidentally did or something haha. It's the 2017 Baseball Prospectus. Baseball is the only sport I pay attention to really, so I figured why not?!
I'm literally always entering in Goodreads giveaways. Don't think I've ever won one, though. I did randomly get a book one day, but it was an advanced copy of a book I don't recall ever asking for and had a note from the publisher. Still haven't read it haha. In other news, I finished Carrie today. Now I'm trying to decide if I jump right into Salem's Lot or read something else.
If there's somehow anyone in here that has read Ulysses, I'm taking a seminar class on Joyce and am very much considering writing a final paper comparing Buck Mulligan to John Belushi
I took a seminar on Ulysses when I was in school and one of my friends compared them one day! Good luck, that book's a tough one!
Man if you don't want to dive into a 400 page King book you should probably avoid IT, The Stand, Under The Dome, 11/22/63, most of The Dark Tower, etc haha
I just meant at the moment. Just announced the next book for Missaligned's book club episode so I'll need to read that first probably before diving into any longer books. Edit: I had started Zoo Station by David Downing before reading Carrie over the weekend so I'm going to finish that. Then I'll read Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist for the book club podcast, and then Salem's Lot will follow.
I read it before a few years ago on my own, but the class is tons of fun. We often go way beyond any general themes or ideas in the story and get into a more meta discussion about what we feel Joyce is attempting to convey through the way in which he wrote it
Finished Zoo Station by David Downing this morning. I liked it, but since there are 6 books in the series, I'm undecided on if I'll read the other five. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is next!
Been on a Crichton kick lately, read Jurassic Park, Lost World and Next last year, just finished Micro and now onto Timeline. What's everyone's favorite of his?
Found some good book deals on Amazon today in case anyone is interested (Kindle editions) Brave New World - Aldous Huxley Anathem - Neal Stephenson White Noise - Don DeLillo Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman Neuromancer - William Gibson
do you guys use and like thriftbooks? i am a huge fan and they now have a smartphone app. free shipping on $10 or more too.
It's just an online site that has new and used books in various categories such as "new" "like new" "good" "acceptable"... and so on. I usually only buy good and like new because for every one of my purchases those have been in great shape. It's good if you buy a lot of books quite frequently since they are cheap and shipping is low.
Plus, you get a $5 off $15 coupon for every $50 you spend. They make it very easy to get a lot of books for very little money.
This has convinced me to make an account. I had only checked it out once of twice but I'm considering getting into the older Star Wars books and they're all like $3 and change on there using the "deal" option.
