I'm about halfway through the Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods and I'm not sure I'm enjoying it. It just feels kinda pandering? Idk. Lately I'm kinda cynical. I'm not mad at women being pandered to but it's kinda boring. Like when I read Grady Hendrix I'm not upset about the feminist themes and centering things around female characters, but idk. Sometimes it doesn't feel organic and feels more self serving? I think there's def a place for entertaining popcorn reads that aren't super deep and know their audience. And it's not like I'm out here reading lauded classic authors or being pretentious. It just feels a bit stale and boring. Idk sometimes authors writing books about books feels like how much Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood and making movies? Idk man im working on a Sunday so not making sense of my own thoughts haha Edit: also, I've been tracking what I read on Goodreads and I swear every book on there has exactly 4 stars. Plz don't fact check this. It's my very scientific and researched opinion
Been working my way through the Riley Sager books and I’ve been really enjoying them. About to finish The Only One Left. I guess my main criticism of his writing would be the amount of twists he feels the need to include. Its worked to varying degrees so far but it seems like the last 5 chapters of each book I’ve read has been like twists for twists sake when the original one suits the story just fine.
I’m to the point where I read them because it’s comfort and I know what to expect. Can’t stop now! which is your favorite?
I intend to read them all. It’s kinda like my palate cleanser that I read in between other books. I think my favorite has been Middle of the Night. Then I’d probably say The Last Time I Lied, The Only One Left, Final Girls, and Survive The Night. I think I remember you saying you really enjoyed Survive The Night but I really struggled with that one for some reason. Kinda strange that was the first one I read and I didn’t like it but decided to continue reading his other books. I’m glad I did.
I've had a book on hold with Libby forever and it keeps saying I'm first in line and I don't believe them!!
I really liked Lock Every Door and Home After Dark. Hated Final Girls and House Across the Lake or whatever was just absolutely insane. they are definitely great “turn your brain off and enjoy the ride” reads for sure so you’re doing it right!
I seem to always have the opposite problem with Libby. It’ll say it’s weeks so I’ll get other books then boom next day it’s available and I don’t have the time for them all
Yukio Mishima’s Spring Snow friggin ruled. Very Shakespearean ending. I’m glad I visited Japan before reading it, since there was a lot that probs would’ve gone over my head otherwise. Dude’s prose is consistently off the charts. Excited to read the rest of the series—ordered the other three books in the mail!
It's taken 2 months, but I'm now 50 pages from.the end of Shogun, and what a ride it's been. Despite it being just under 1500 pages, I'm still thinking "there's no way it's going to get wrapped up by the end"
This was great. I love books about pop culture, movies, and TV, and that show was one of my favorites growing up. Highly recommend if you were a fan, or just interested in how they made movie criticism more accessible to average people.
I’ve already completed 11 books this year. I don’t think I’ve ever read that many books in any 2 year span of my life
Was gonna read Wuthering Heights and like I know it's a classic and all but I read like one page and idk if I'm in the mood for old timey wordy prose
I read it a few years ago and found it very hard to follow haha, I feel like with classics they're either a breeze or like this was for another time lol
This is me every couple months with Lonesome Dove. Not so much they way they speak or anything but it’s just very wordy and dry
Lonesome Dove is extremely worth it. There's some great characters, great prose, and the deconstruction of America's West.
Finished O Pioneers! today. What a beautiful exploration of the relationship between people and their land and country.
on my shelf but haven't gotten to it yet. Cather is amazing. My Ántonia blew me away a few years back - truly special book by her I'd also rec.
want to also rec this one to the thread. finished this the other day and it was stunning. here’s my review
