Hated Babel, read it with my brother but absolutely would not have finished it otherwise

Seems like that one gets a lot of hate. It was the first book we read in our book club (and I picked it lol) and they apparently tore it to pieces the next meeting and I wasn't able to attend. Much prefer The Poppy War

This is why I personally don't include audiobooks in my read list. In line with this posters reference to attention span, I always listen to audiobooks while doing something else such as driving or cooking, the audiobook becomes a secondary activity, more of a background, as opposed to reading a physical book so I refer to it separately.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

set myself a goal to read 100 books this year because I love making myself miserable. anyway pretty close to on track so far at the end of January I'm about to finish 8 and 9. been alternating some longer books with short 200 page stuff to keep myself going and because I'm still finishing two series rereads from last year, once those are done I'll probably read whatever

This is a really good point and something I honestly never considered.

I’m not anti audiobook. I’m sure I’d enjoy a non fiction/informative one, I just don’t think my brain can pay attention/keep tabs on a fiction story like that. I assume, though, like reading an actual book it is a skill that you develop over time.

Like I said in a previous comment - I drive long distances for work and I'm able to focus while highway driving. If I'm driving through neighborhoods or making a ton of quick stops I can't focus. I usually have an audiobook and a separate at home physical or kindle book that I'm working on at the same time.

  9. Ay, fellow high school English teacher here! Think we have similar feelings about it, but we're coming from the educational perspective. I only let my students use audiobooks as long as they're physically reading and annotating along with it. Otherwise, you're just being told a story, which is more passive than actively engaging with the text, which is ultimately the goal in English class.

Starting Vineland since it’s all but confirmed to be the basis for the new PTA. I’ve only read Inherent Vice of Pynchon. I’m a total poser

Listening to fiction audio books is another skill you could develop overtime

Just finished Stoner by John Williams and I don’t think I’ve been that moved by a book since I first read the Stranger by Albert Camus 20 years ago.

Waiting for Butcher's Crossing to become available at the Library. I've heard it's as good as Stoner

Stoner is good but it always just seemed to me like a good book about an unremarkable man. Maybe that’s what people love about it. I liked it but it didn’t profoundly touch me like it did for others.

just finished The Martian. Not my typical read but it was the book club's pick for the month. I enjoyed it even though my eyes glazed over at some of the incredibly detailed scientific explanations at times. Guess I need to watch the movie now!

Read the Martian before the movie came out. Just finished Project Hail Mary on audible 2 weeks ago. Just starting Artemis. I really love Andy Weir’s style. Normally I wouldn’t care for the over technicality but damn he makes it so palatable and enjoyable

Just finished the first in Thursday Murder Club. Didn't realize it was a series but I guess I'm glad I didn't cause I prob wouldn't have committed to it had I known, but it was very charming and entertaining.
