I ran through That Was Then, This is Now today while my kids wrote their final papers. I remember reading and rereading this one a bunch in middle school and preferring it to The Outsiders. Hinton is not a very good writer, but occasionally she will give you glimpses of something special. The drug stuff was pretty laughable. This is a weird one, but I can definitely see how it shaped a lot of stuff that I like now. It meanders with no real plot, but I kind’ve like that. It’s aimless and messy and the narration is bad and then really bad stuff happens and the narrator goes numb. It’s almost like the little kid version of Less Than Zero.
My second book of the year was Ninety Days In The 90s by Andy Frye and I definitely recommend it if you're into 90s nostalgia. It's a time travel story that takes place in modern and 1996 Chicago. Being that I live there and love all the punk bands mentioned, it turns into a cool story about second chances that isn't entirely predictable like some time travel stories tend to be.
Started this last week and am very into it. Love when people just list names of streets the characters are driving down in LA.
So damn awful. Pretty much this author (who I do enjoy based off a long time ago rec from @Colby Searcy) was sending young women who have a following on Book Tok emails asking them to do book promo for his upcoming release (mostly normal). However, instead of a video talking about the book, the email suggested getting mostly naked for the video. And to send in the video and he could approve/deny. Fucking what???? Disappointing from an author who I own 4-5 books.
Finished this morning. 7/10. Enjoyed it. Def got bad weird like they were losing the plot slightly and Chuck P really has no idea how to voice a 13 year old girl, but made it compelling and outrageous enough to be interesting
Candide is one of my favorites. It’s a quick read and laugh out loud funny the whole time. Which is a little disturbing considering horrible things happen the whole time
yeah new books are absurdly priced. Even when I hit that B&N sale with 50% off all books, the $$ still added up fast. I utilize the library and the Libby app a lot.
Me too I’m just trying to be more focused this year and read books I already have or books coming out that I want to purchase instead of checkout from library
There are only two or three authors whose stuff I buy new right away. Usually I just wait for my birthday/Christmas to ask for new books. I’ll go crazy at yard sales and thrift shops though.
4.5/5 for me. This book basically chronicles most of the bands I listened to in my teen years into early 20s. Any Chorus users who were on AP.net 100% should read this book, plus it contains quotes from our very own @Jason Tate!
