  1. Just remember one thing... reading is about what YOU like. Don't ever apologize for reading something others might not see as advanced or cool or something. I'm 33 but if I think a Young Adult story looks good, I'm going to read it lol

One of my earliest memories growing up was reading my first Harry Potter book when I was about 9. My aunt was was 28. I asked her to read it along with me so we could enjoy it together and she did. To this day, no matter what it is, if it's Harry Potter related, we bond over it. If you see something you like, read it... and this chat is a safe space if you want to discuss it.

Brought my son to Barnes and Noble for the first time since he's been able to walk and let him roam the toddler section, we got 3 new books for his collection.

Christ, I have an extremely strong stomach and a high tolerance for disturbing fiction, but Hurricane Season has some passages that rival the hardest parts to stomach in Blood Meridian. Her writing is so good but parts of this are really testing me!

Finished “A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbable Presidency of Grover Cleveland” by Troy Senik. Good biography of one of the few presidents that I knew very little about. It got a little lost in the weeds when it came to the whole gold vs. silver crisis that developed during his first term. He was quite the principled politician that sadly backfired on him for much of his presidency.

I think I am going to sneak in some mysteries before reading some horror in October. Gonna start with some local MN authors in Allen Eskens and William Kent Krueger.

The Geoff Rickly book rules. One of my favorites of the year (my list is here)

  11. My backlog is so annoying, I’m trying to get through everything and I keep getting sidetracked. I’m midway through The Only Good Indians right now. I might stay with Stephen Graham Jones and knock out Night of the Mannequins since it’s so short. I have Books of Blood by Clive Barker that I’ve been meaning to do. And I still need to do Wizard and Glass on my Dark Tower journey. There’s just not enough time in a day lol

I've heard it's nowhere near as good. That first one was incredible so that's kind of a bummer

I’ve read all four, and would say the 2-4 are a solid major step down.

same, I wish it wasn't so tricky to get a copy of Rickly's book out here. dude's one of my favourite lyricists, I'm sure an incredible novelist too

reading Suttree right now. stunning book but so so dense, it's heavy reading

for real, we hit up BN, target and crumbl. It was sick. I used to go to BN with him every wednesday (I had wednesdays off for a year for paternity leave) and one of the ladies that worked there recognized us and said "he's out of the stroller!"

Currently finishing up a great book, The Lost Weekend by Charles Jackson. It’s about an alcoholic with a long weekend to himself, struggling against his own devices, published in 1944. It honestly could’ve come out recently. Real page-turner stuff, while being entirely character-and-language-driven. Totally a random find of a book that I’m glad to have picked up.

Just finished reading The Sympathizer and holy shit, that's one of the best books I've read in years. The complexity and depth of his perspective really rearranged my brain in terms of how I've seen Vietnam portrayed through American art my whole life -- and he gets all of that across within the margins of a brutal, heart-racing spy story.

I'm ordering a copy of The Committed asap. Plus, I'd be absolutely shocked if the HBO miniseries directed by Park Chan Wook isn't one of the best things on television next year:

Id be lying if I said I didn’t like it though and wasn’t looking forward to more Riley Sager ridiculousness

I’ve forgotten a lot of how that one ended but I do not forget how dumb I thought it was lol

I’m glad it’s keeping you still wanting to read more because I STILL haven’t read House Across the Lake or the newest one (which I’ve heard is pretty good!)

For me I think it’s the completionist in me where I’ve read all the others, might as well keep going at this point.

The House Across The Lake I blew through and was kinda just in disbelief as to how insane it all was that I actually enjoyed it!

still waiting on my hold of the newest one. They are definitely nice quick palate cleansing type books for me

  24. I’m about halfway through The Only Good Indians. That shit just went from 0-60 so quickly lol I had to go back and read a few pages because his descriptions are pretty gruesome.
