She’s so good. I can see why one wouldn’t like her though. It can get nature doc-y, but she makes it meaningful for me.

Just finished Player Piano. Vonnegut is basically my go to when I can't settle on another book. I hadn't read this one yet and as per usual, I loved it. It's a far more grounded and straight-forward narrative than any other Vonnegut novel I've read.

I check goodreads to see what my friends rated books, not other people. Plus I have a few friends that write reviews and have bookstagrams.

For sure, and just to keep track of TBR stuff and just list making. It's just funny to me how critical general GR Reviewers are and how serious they take themselves.

I'm definitely enjoying Imaginary Friend so far, but some of the dialogue is just atrocious! It must be hard writing second graders, though, and trying to strike a balance between precocious and childish. The "packfist" exchange made me cringe so hard.

almost done with it. Loved it so much. Feels like the book was written for me. Every one of those albums (except the donnas tbh) is one of my all time favs.

Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties is absolutely amazing.

Joe Hill’s NOS4A2 has been fun, but I don’t love his writing, and I also can’t stand some of the rape aspects of it.

Machado’s In the Dreamhouse was good enough to finish but not really great (I particularly disliked the 2nd-person-POV). Kind of a weird book to have an opinion about considering its content, but the writing totally distanced me from its subject matter. I really dug some of the concepts though and it had a few very memorable moments, so I feel like her short stories would jive better with me.

I am going to read that soon, but I have a friend who said almost that exact same thing about In the Dreamhouse.

The short story collection has been sort of mindblowing so far. Especially the first story, The Husband Stitch. Definitely giving this thing out as a Christmas gift to a couple select people in my life.

Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country was amazing, loved it. Need to check out the rest of his stuff.

Now currently halfway through Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden for the first time.

After nearly or roughly a year finally finished Ducks Newburyport. Only took until my first flight in two years to do so. If only I could throw my Kindle out the window from my seat.

Spending a full year on a book only to feel this way about it sounds like an awful experience. Just curious, why didn't you put it down?

Because I’m stubborn and felt it a point of pride to finish haha.

Seriously though I didn’t read this book correctly at all. 5-15 minute intervals to knock me out before bed, no way to approach this. Towards the end I started reading in longer sessions and this definitely helped my appreciation of it more.

I read Ducks halfway and skipped to the last 100 or so pages, I really didn't feel like I missed much tbh

The Secret Garden just was not holding my attention and unfortunately it's entrenched in colonialist sentiments. And I get it's old but especially with it being a children's book, it just does not sit right with me to give space to something that introduces / enforces casual racism to kids.

Going to try Pitch Dark by Renata Adler next. It seems very unique in its structure so we'll see how it goes.

The day is finally here! My award-winning novella drops today. I spent several years of my life working on this, chiseling it, deepening it, creating exactly the kind of story I'd wanted to read while growing up. Poetic coming-of-age vibes, tinged with magical realism. Think something like a cross between Haruki Murakami and Virginia Woolf. Born out of the catharsis and healing journey I went through with my own family... this one is so close to my heart and I hope some of you give it a read, find enjoyment/meaning in its pages :folded:

Read NOS4A2 a couple weeks ago. While I loved the premise, I found the book a mess and I honestly didn’t care about any of the characters very much. I had other problems with it but overall it was very readable.

Started The Terror. Got 300 pages in and found it overwrought but effective enough and I was enjoying the slow burn. Unfortunately, some of it rubbed me the wrong way and I decided to do some research into Dan Simmons, and ended up looking at his Facebook page. Yikes.

Now taking a break from horror and reading Crossroads.

Crossroads is so good so far. I forgot how much I love how he writes his characters - you get to know them well, and fast.
