I've only read the newer Jane Hawk series and it's fine but I don't think it's necessarily typical Koontz affair
I've read "The Taking" which was perfectly acceptable and fine, haha. I've got a couple others of his on the shelf to eventually check out.
Oh, I thought you were referring to Jane Hawk series. I haven't read either of Nameless or Odd Thomas but I've heard good things about Odd Thomas.
Sorry, so many series getting named! I'll no doubt read more depending on my reaction to the other books he's written.
I finished this and it was a real tough read, not gonna lie. I’m honestly relieved I got through it. It was beautiful, but in the end not really what I was expecting. I’m looking forward to moving onto Duino Elegies. But for right now, I’m getting started on Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House.
Read The Spy Who Loved Me and I'm almost through all of the Ian Flemming bond books. Not sure if he is just a product of the 50s/60s or he just hates / doesn't understand women or something. The line about women enjoying semi-rape in The Spy Who Loved Me was shocking and disgusting. Jumping into the new Star Wars Thrawn book. Then have to get to a few other of the recs I was given in here, then I'll go back to the Red Rising Trilogy. Just so little time and so many things to do for entertainment. Having a 3 year old and a wife, my "me" time is limited and I have to choose between TV, a movie, reading, video games, etc.
I also finished that earlier this year. Favorite character is definitely Sevro. Loved everything with him and his howlers.
Just finished Ponciá Vicencio by Conceição Evaristo, a short gorgeous Brazilian novel about generational trauma and slavery. Very poetic and sparse and just overall stunning. Was a page turner and filled with hope despite the sadness.
@Donnie Ruth I have about 100 pages left of The Maidens and so far it's just fine. Like nothing had really happened that is that exciting, really kinda slow. I'm expecting a crazy ending or I'm gonna be disappointed haha
Damnnn! I actually enjoyed reading it and flew right through it. It was the ending that left me ???? Also I finished the newest Riley Sager book Survive the Night and …. ugh. It was prob my least favorite lol Which sucks because Home Before Dark might have been my favorite.
Idk what it is it just feels slow and not a whole lot excitement/intensity imo, which is weird because Silent Patient I felt was pretty fast paced. I'll let you know when I finish and my final thoughts. Survive The Night is my next read! I agree that Home Before Dark is my favorite and Riley's best but going in I really don't think this can be any worse than Final Girls I think we've talked about how much that book pisses me off
I’m very curious what you’ll think of the last part of the Maidens because I literally was so ??? at it. Def post your thoughts once you finish! I really hope for your sake you end up liking Survive the Night more than Final Girls! (I know how much you hated that one hahaha)
The Maidens story in itself I wasn't big on but I loved the tie-in to The Silent Patient ending. Although I don't necessarily think it was done that well in the sense that essentially the entire book is a giant red herring as a prequel to The Silent Patient. I just think it was really cool that these books are basically a part of the same world so to speak.
that's on my list. i've heard good things. I just tried The Door by Magda Szabo and I just could not get into it. Quit about 3/4's of the way, which was painful but necessary. Just started Paterson by William Carlos Williams, more my vibe.
I read Paterson about a year ago and had a companion book by Joel Conarroe that was really helpful in unpacking a lot of it. It's hard to find but definitely recommend if you can get a copy.
Read this last year! It’s good and even great in some parts but didn’t work for me as a whole. My friend loved it though.
So, finished Lonesome Dove a couple weeks ago. It was really great, especially the second half. I don’t know if I could commit to reading any of the other books in that series though. I followed it up with a very short book, The Hole by Hiroko Oyamada and didn’t enjoy it at all. Probably one of my least favorite reads in a long time and it’s only 90 pages. Now halfway through Love Medicine, which is gorgeous and captivating. Highly highly recommend.
