I've owned it for a while too, just never got around to reading it. What better time than now to start it though? I'm seeing him in London (while on my honeymoon) and will have plenty of time st the airport and on the plane.
If you're picking up DFW collections, "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" is awesome. As for non-DWF essay collections, I thought "Pulphead" and "Magic Hours" were really interesting. Also, there's "Out of Sheer Rage" by Geoff Dyer. Essentially, Dyer wanted to write a book about DH Lawrence but this turned out to be a book about him procrastinating writing the Lawrence book instead. I've read absolutely nothing by Lawrence and this is still one of my favorite books.
These all sound excellent and exactly what I was going for - thank you very much! May pick them all up when I get paid.
If you like Klosterman, check out Lester Bangs collections. I'm currently reading Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Taste.
I've been reading War & Peace for almost a year now and I'm only around page 470 out of 1200. I love it. I just never have a peaceful moment to read.
It took me two years alone just to get through the first chapter about trees ahaha. Nevertheless, it ended up becoming one of my favorites!
Curious to hear your thoughts as you make your way through it. I loved the premise but thought the execution was pretty poor.
on a kick right now! This week I wrapped up Klosterman's I Wear the Black Hat and loved it, a cool short story collection called You Are Having a Good Time and Three Years With the Rat which I ripped through - a cool, concise and cryptic mystery with some time travel stuff. Great first novel. Just started Private Citizens, brilliant writing so far. Also picked up Bit Rot by Douglas Coupland, Civilwarland in Bad Decline by George Saunders and Golden Delicious by Christopher Boucher today. Good week
finishing up The Terror. for any fans of the film The Thing and / or isolation and paranoia type works, best check this out.
i'm attempting to finish up Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant before it's out so I can get my review done, but I'm a bit behind on it. Really enjoying it so far. Recently finished up Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Tastes which is a collection of Lester Bangs' articles. It was a good read.
I bought it over the summer and it sucked waiting until now to read it, haha. i also thought, looking at the size of it, that it would be a slow build so like, 25 pages in or whatever when the first major incident happens i thought, "oh shit, this is gonna be 770 pages of awesomeness" and was not disappointed.
Totally agree. Have you read anything else from Simmons? He always milks the full potential out of his storylines, there's really nobody like him, at least in horror. I like the Stephen King quote that's on the front of like all of Simmon's paperbacks, "Simmons writes like a hot-rodding angel.."
I've never really read any horror, is Simmons a good author to start with? Currently reading All The King's Men and I've been loving it so far, the struggle for me will be if it can hold my interest throughout the book seeing as it's on the longer end.
SUCH a great read, and it appears to be shaping up to be a promising Starz show, too. Just started Gaiman's The Graveyard Book for some Halloween feels. Looking forward to your AG thoughts!
I had the opposite experience of disliking it in high school but really liking after college. What didn't you enjoy about it?
I have a hard time putting it into words? Gaiman is a beautiful writer, so the craft throughout is exquisite. But I remember having this wonder and awe of the story the first time I read it, while this time I was mostly bored and unimpressed. It's a weird balance, because I still thought most of the ideas and stuff were creative and unique.
I agree and relate. Read it last year at 27 and while I like the ideas, settings and tone it just didn't do much for me. Didn't feel like it connected or something. Just a series of weird stuff that left me cold.
