    hey you lil piss baby

This feels like such a massive leap up. I liked the last one quite a bit (I think it was in the tail end of my top 50 that year) but outside of full album listens, the title track was the only standalone track I really loved.

Echoing the love for the title track on this one too. I didn't play the singles much either, so "Dying to Believe" and "Out of Sight" still feel very fresh.

Exciting to see them getting a lot more attention right away this time around. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon the first album, but I remember the wider hype around the band not coming until at least a few months later. Feels like they really built up momentum in the time between releases.

This album gets better with every listen. "You Are a Beam of Light" really hit me today.

The slower songs on this are really something to listen to while driving windows down on a summer night

Score aside, I really don't understand that review. Basically sounds like the reviewer just wanted them to remake their debut again, and uh, why would they do that?

I definitely get some points of the review because I prefer their more fast-paced stuff, but the more subdued songs on JRG are growers and really shine after repeated listens.

And yeah I’m definitely happy they pushed the envelope a bit and took some chances here.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

that breakdown in "Don't Go Away" is heavier than any shit I've ever heard in metalcore don't try and change my mind

I had never heard of this band until today, but really enjoyed the album. Will go back and check out the debut now

Finally listened to this today and that first track is absolutely killer. I could listen to that on repeat all day - and I did!

Then I listened to the rest of this record and it was just as good!

Not surprised Pitchfork managed to fuck another review up.

This album is still very very good.

Also, cool performances of "Mars" and the title track:

Watching their livestream and seeing a bunch of New Zealanders packed in a venue makes me miss shows (especially The Beths) :(

When shows come back I want a Ratboys/The Beths co-headlining tour and I'm not just saying that because love both bands. I feel like they both would be perfect on tour together, they bring a lot of energy, have overlapping fanbases, and are already friends with each other.
