The spice level is gonna depend on two things: how much of it they use, and how they prepare the peppers. If they're cutting the seeds out before adding, you'll get the flavor of the pepper, but not the heat. I mean, i've had ghost pepper beers that had no spice to them, just flavor (thank god for that, though ha).
I'm fully aware, but it would take so much of the milder peppers to equal the heat level of even a minor overuse of the habanero. I've had more pepper beers that overdo the spice than omit it or get it right. And a ghost pepper beer without the spice sounds like a complete waste to me. They don't taste that distinctly different from other peppers, so why waste all the spice? And speaking of pepper beers, it's about time for me to brew my smokey jalapeño saison. Considering entering it into a homebrew contest too, but not sure if I'll get it brewed in time.
Has anyone had Oddside Hazel's Nuts before? I a bar by me tapped a keg this week and I'm considering going and getting a pint.
I was unable to get my hands on any Hazel's Nuts but I've heard nothing but great things. People around me, whose opinions on beer I respect, rave about it. I was just unwilling to trade for it at the time.
I bought some Anchor Mango Wheat yesterday because a coupon app I use had a $2 back offer on it. There are better fruited wheat beers/pale ales/IPAs out there, but it's hard to beat at a $7 price point for a sixer.
It's like 80 out and I'm drinking a North Brewing Company Gose with local sea salt and this is absolutely wonderful. I like göses a lot more than the average bear though.
Mom picked up River Horse Roly Poly Pils and Summer Blonde for my trip back home. She knows how to pick 'em. My favorite NJ brewery.
went to Torst in Brooklyn yesterday and holy hell, what a bar. second favorite beer bar next to Monk's.
Yesterday I spent the afternoon hanging out with a buddy of mine who is about to move away, we went through a few good bottles together. Triple Digit - Bourbon Barrel Chickow! Wicked Weed - Genesis (2014 ... ages soooo well) Burnt Hickory - General Joe's Quickstep Founders - Breakfast Stout (2012... did not age so well, sadly) Cycle - Monday
Row 34 across the street has them on often as does Five Horses Tavern which isn't super far. Worth stopping into Row 34 for a pour and then getting cans to go at the actual brewery.
I say 1-2 years on Breakfast Stout is about all you can get. Just enough age to take off the coffee bitterness and change it up from what it's like fresh.
Yeah, that's what we agreed upon as well. 4 years was way too long, but it was worth trying. I actually found a full case of each '12 BS, '13 BCBS, '14 Rubaeus, '14 Genesis, '14 Serenity, and '14 Bretticent in the cellar of a friend's bar last week. He let me take one of each to try and then said I could come back and buy more (at normal retail cost) if I wanted. So far I will definitely be going back and buying the rest of that case of '14 Genesis.
Dang, that's awesome. Wish I had more space (and funds) to allocate towards full cases of some of the stuff listed. Though, I'll be getting a full case of stuff at Hoof Hearted in a couple of weeks.
Not yet, haven't seen their stuff in stores when I am home. And when I say that, I mean just at BuyRite. I would like to stop over to them, Beach Haus in Belmar, and Dark City.
I wouldn't bother with Beach Haus, but Dark City is off to a good start and Kane is the best brewery in the state, so they're definitely worth visits. Them being only a few minutes away from each other makes it even better.
I got a new job yesterday so today I drove up to the new Alchemist brewery to celebrate and grabbed a four pack of Heady Topper and a four pack of Focal Banger. I found Stiegl (my go to beer during my semester in Vienna) for the first time since I came back to the States so I'm extra excited to crack into that this weekend.
