not super often, but my boss does have a liquor cabinet in his office. usually has some pretty good scotch in there.
We have an open alcohol policy here at work. I can't work drunk, but I can have a drink at lunch or at my desk. We have a kegerator (currently on tap: Deschutes Mirror Pond) but we do our best not to abuse the privilege though. We usually save it for after 3 on Fridays, or after 5 on any other day. We also all have various bottles of whiskey at our desks and rotate through those on "Whiskey Wednesday" and "Friday Rye Day".
Not about drinking beer, but I did have a really successful interview with a new brewery opening up here in town that I think will lead to me being a cellarman for them and, eventually, into an assistant brewer position, assuming it all goes well. I'm super excited.
Has anyone had anything from Maine Brewing Company? I'm in Maine now and I haven't had any yet, but I've heard it's fantastic.
If they have Lunch, get it. MO and Another One are also solid. Dinner is a must-have if they have it, but it's fairly rare.
Just found out Western PA is finally getting Boulevard distribution. I cannot wait to buy me some Tank 7.
Thanks, man! Haha, I should've! I just hit them up really early and I believe I was their first interview. The whole interview lasted almost 90 minutes because we sat there shooting the shit. I'm really stoked because they're planning on having a dedicated sour tap and a dedicated barrel-aged tap once they finalize the deal on some barrels. They also know the owner or brewer from Central State in Indiana who do all brett beers and they're going to brew a collab with them to get their yeast strain. They're promising to be creative which can be either a disaster or amazing but either way, it'll be a great learning experience, which is what I need given I have basically 18 months of bartending experience in my entire life and that's it for the beer industry. Thanks! And grab some Tank 7 it's awesome. Also really enjoyed the the smokestack series imperial stout with coconut. The Calling is a really nice IPA but a bit too sweet.
Congrats! Also I'll be seeking employment in a few months so... consider this thread if any positions open up
My parents are going to Maine for a few days before I meet them in Boston and Oxbow and Maine Brewing just so happen to be directly on their way. Gonna see if my dad can bring a few bottles home.
Lol well I'm half joking around/half severely anxious about finding a job after i get my Masters degree, but as it actually pertains to this thread/my own interests I could probably market my background in environmental policy/sustainability management to some extent within the brewing industry as one option. I've never worked in the industry before, so this is all mainly just speculation my also non-industry wise family members and I have thrown around.
Ah, word. If it's something you'd love to do on a day-to-day basis, try like hell to get in. I've been grinding for 1.5 years at a bottle shop that has 50 taps in a farmers market just to get the bartending experience, talk to brewery reps and distributors, and soak up as much beer knowledge from coworkers, customers and friends as I can. I've learned more about the industry in this time than I ever knew in the ___ number of years I've been drinking craft beer. Feels good to possibly be on the precipice of getting in with a really inventive, creative brewery. They'll have a dedicated sour and barrel-aged tap, with 12 taps total, six of which are constant rotation. I haven't even filled out an application yet, but the interview lasted almost 90 minutes because we just shot the shit. Essentially, if you think the industry is something you want to get into, get into it! You can do it.
@KidLightning Is Oddside's Mayan Mocha Stout out by you? We got some in this week and was wondering if you'd picked it up. Cinnamon, coffee, nutmeg and habanero stout, around 6-something percent. If they cut the habanero it'd be a fantastic beer, but even with it, it's one I still pick up with some regularity. Wondering your thoughts.
