All Together was awesome and a great job on their part. I'm specifically talking about the idea of breweries trading recipes of some of their regular beers and brewing them. I picked up a Veil beer that Other Half brewed about a year ago and I think that may have been the first in what they were planning on doing as a regular thing at that time. A bunch of other breweries of joined in on the fun since then too. EDIT: Yup, here we go: They've done the same with J. Wakefield, Trillium and some other people since then too.
Been getting a ton of ads on IG that The Bruery is now shipping to NH, and can sign up for the Preservation Society. @irthesteve is that club worth signing up for?
A brewery here that's made their small name on hype hazy beers and 'sour' fruit slush beers released this bad ass vienna lager that they cold-aged in a red wine barrel for 2 months before blending with some fresh, young, fermenting pilsner to naturally carbonate and it's so wonderful.
Interesting-sounding new book coming in the fall about women in brewing and how they were mostly removed from the industry by "witch hunting": A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse | Chicago Review Press If you saw a picture of a woman in a pointy hat, stirring a cauldron, you'd probably think of a witch -- but you should be thinking of a brewmaster! From the Stone Age to the 1500s, ale or beer provided an inexpensive way to preserve grains and brewing it was primarily a woman's craft. For some women, brewing became a career: a way to bring in income for their families or even to be financially independent. The female brewers or alewives found in English marketplaces in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods also had a distinctive look: they would often wear tall, pointy hats so their customers could easily find them among the crowds and they would frequently be standing in front of big, boiling cauldrons. A rise of religious fundamentalist beginning in the early 16th century brought witch-hunting mania to Europe, leading to the deaths of 40,000 people, overwhelmingly women, accused of witchcraft during the “Great Hunt.” Some male brewers saw an opportunity to take out their competition and accused women brewers of witchcraft. Such rumors, coupled with the enforcement of stricter gender norms and growing social condemnation of female brewers as being 'sinful,' led to a tremendous drop in the number of women in brewing. Today, the brewing industry, originally created by women, remains dominated by men, with a Stanford study finding that only 4% of craft beer breweries employ a female brewmaster. So the next time you see an hyper-masculine beer commercial, remember that brewing beer used to be "women's work" -- and consider whether the breweries you support include women on their teams.
I haven't tried it yet, but Off Color brewing here just released "Beer For Burgers", a Boilermaker-inspired bourbon barrel-aged bock: Beer for Burgers — Off Color Brewing Inspired by the classic fizzy lager and shot specials enjoyed at corner bars everywhere, a base Helles Bock starts out quite plain to maximize contributions from its time in bourbon barrels. The final beer is a blend of freshly used bourbon barrels, second use barrels, as well as fresh beer. During aging, Beer for Burgers picks up notes of coconut, vanilla, alcoholic heat, and roasted wood tannins.
I'd be down for trying that, but I am hesitant because their Beer For Pizza is one of my least favorite beers I have ever had. Tried to be "cola inspired" and it was a big miss for me.
I don't know if it's due to the pandemic or what, but I've noticed way less The Bruery beers near me. The past few weeks, I've seen a little more pop up, but prior to the Pandemic I was seeing quite a bit, then noticed a long period where I weren't seeing any.
I think it's worth giving it a go. The good thing about Preservation is that you can cancel anytime if you aren't getting your worth out of it, so you aren't TOO locked in if it doesn't work out. They usually do a really good job of picking the 4 bottles that are part of each month so you'll be sure to get a nice selection, plus the 10% discount is nice if you ever order more than your normal allocation. Here was Q1's four bottles: Q4 last year Q3 last year...
Great notion rbg is really good and quite dangerous at 9%. Cracked it open not paying attention and I have quite a few things to do around the house lol.
Beer For Burgers tastes pretty dead on like a beer and a shot. I split a can with my wife and that was plenty for me, though. Beer For Tacos was the best one, Beer For Pizza was good but not something I need a ton of. Curious to try the cream ale, Beer For Baseball I think?
I didn’t go quite as hard as you, I just got a case and half or so. But I’m sharing with a friend also in maine. Stoked to try this Very Hazy and Super Treat first. I got a nice variety of the IPAS so next time I know which ones I want to stock up on.
Today I hit up alchemist, von Trapp, and idyletime Tomorrow I'm going to champlain orchards, burlington beer, and possibly foam depending on time.
