I grew bored of IPAs after a point. There's some great brews of that style out there but man, I just got so sick of that bitter piney taste.
Overall, that's kinda my thing with them is how similar the all are. That's why I really appreciate when breweries mix things up (grapefruit, pineapple sculpin) or showcase what different hops can do, etc. But for the most part an IPA tastes like an IPA to me. I'll drink it and enjoy it, but I like to get excited about beer
I tried it last year at the brewery when I visited Miami and loved it, hoping to have some again when I'm back in Miami next week.
I feel like there's as much variation with IPAs as with any other type of beer. Never get bored of them.
Anyone ever had Pliney The Elder? Also, just saw this Is That Really Craft Beer? 27 Surprising Corporate Brewers Didn't know that Elysian was owned by Anheuser-Busch. Still love their beers.
I brewed an IPA using Heady Topper yeast last night, along with 12 oz. of hops – 3 oz. each of Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Columbus, with an ounce of each left for dry hopping. (so 1 pound total). Hopefully fermentation is going strong when I get home tonight because I still need to add some honey to it.
BostInno is currently running a Hop Madness bracket to find the best hoppy beers in Massachusetts. Here's the Elite 8: These Are the 8 Best Hoppy Beers in Massachusetts [Bracket]
I've had Younger a few times, but not Elder yet. It's just annoyingly hard to get a glass down here that it's not worth trying really
Both of these are very good beers, but I don't think either live up to the hype they have. They're both great if you can get them, but not worth the fight.
Budweiser's whole macro brew ad campaign is the lamest thing they could do. Fitting though, it's got St. Louis little man's disease written all over it.
Just bottled my first saison over the weekend! Three weeks til it's ready but it already tasted wonderful uncarbonated
had pliny the younger about a week and a half ago. waited in line for two and a half hours. it was a delicious beer, but I wouldn't wait in line for two and a half hours again.
Yo just joining up on the discussion here. I'm a fan of all styles (even though I'm so burnt-out on over-hopped West Coast IPAs), and while this isn't the best way to convey this information since beers can vary wildly per category, here is my personal ranked style chart. Gose > Sour/Wild Ale > ESB > Saison > Stout > IPA/PA > Grisette > Lagers > Porters > Ambers/Reds > Browns > Wheats/Fruits I live in Morganton, NC (home of Fonta Flora Brewery) and I'm ~45 mins away from the craft mecca that is Asheville, NC. I have great access to Asheville & Charlotte brews, or well mostly anything made in NC. I do a fair bit of trading and/or selling (not for profit, just you pay me what I paid plus shipping). If you're ever interested in anything from out this way, especially harder-to-find stuff like Fonta Flora, Zebulon, Burial, Wicked Weed, etc ... just hit me up. My name on both BeerAdvocate and Untappd is the same as it is on here. I've also recently begun homebrewing a bit. Rocked out a few lagers over the winter, and my first attempt at a saison is coming up in April. Fingers crossed.
Is Wicked Weed considered hard to find? I've never had any of their beers, but I have the opportunity to pick up 5 of their beers (La Bonté Figs, La Bonté Plum, Brettaberry, Medora and Cherry Go Lightly). They're a little pricey, but are they worth checking out?
I'm not extremely familiar with them, but I've had tastes of a couple things by them before and they were good. I know a few people who have raved about them before.
I think it can be hard to find. I don't know if they do full-US distro yet, but they're close. Mainly what I meant by my "harder to find" comment was that I have access to their brewery-only releases, ie the stuff that doesn't see any distro whatsoever. There are a lot of opinions on this. I think WW is fantastic, even if some of their more-recent sours have tasted a little young and underdeveloped. Their non-funky styles are excellent as well. Pernicious IPA is a very well-done IPA. Their French Toast Stout and S'mores Stout were great. Some people also feel that their beers don't have as much funk as they used to, and I haven't made up my mind on that yet. I've had mixed reviews of most of the Canvas Series (wasn't a big fan of Brettaberry, Bretticent, Cherry Go Lightly and a few others), but there were some (Puzzle Pieces, Oaxacan) that were phenomenal. Most of the distro I've seen outside of NC has either been Canvas Series bottles, flagships like Black Angel and Medora, or their normal beers like Pernicious. The best and worst thing about WW right now is how fast they're putting out new beer. They release a new beer almost every 10 days. To me, thats a little much. They are totally flooding the market with luxury-priced beers. But for others, this means great exposure to new styles of beer on a regular basis, and it makes it incredibly fun to visit their tasting rooms up in Asheville because you're always bound to find something you've never had before.
yeah, that was in west chester but it was the day after st. patrick's day. I'm sure it was crazier at sidecar and monk's though. edit: going up to VT for a week in the summer and stopping in Connecticut area (near Hartford), near Providence RI, and Boston on the way (taking a roundabout way to Vermont). are there any breweries I should see on the way? I want to get Heady Topper when I'm up in Vermont and other beers from The Alchemist (I hear all of their beers are on-point) and I'm also planning on stopping at Woodchuck. if anyone has any winery suggestions too, that would be great. my partner is coming with and she's not a big beer fan.
i spent saturday at stony creek brewery, then thimble island brewing, then this place hops company that had like a hundred on tap. i dont remember everything i had because by the end i was fucking wasted but it was a phenomenal day. stony creek was kinda mediocre, thimble island was better, and i had some kind of beer with a nasty spice-bite to it that i had to down kinda quick. man. wish i had used untappd all day
For brewery hoppining days, I just default to a simple notepad on my phone, and then add into untapped the next day or whatever. Usually ends up looking something like this porter 4 vanilla ipa 35 danksauce triple 47 and then at work the next day i enter it all into untappd
