Really the only time they could have been made. Only when they were making unadulterated genius, would anyone tolerate that experimental shit. After The Beatles split, expectations would be too high for them to put that shit out.
just wait til you get to John & Yoko's Wedding Album. If you get through the entirety of "John & Yoko" (I somehow did), I commend you
JOHHNNN YOOKOOOOOO JOHN YOKKOOO JJOOOHHN YOOOKKOO JOHHNNN YOOKOOOO JOHN YOKKOOO JJOOOHHN YOOOKKOO JOHHNNN YOOKOOOOOO JOHN YOKKOOO JJOOOHHN YOOOKKOO JOHHNNN YOOKOOOOOO JOHN YOKKOOO JJOOOHHN YOOOKKOO JOHHNNN YOOKOOOOOO JOHN YOKKOOO JJOOOHHN YOOOKKOO
He's just so well-suited to country, where technical vocal abilities matter much less than personality and song delivery.
nashville jam is a BOP damn probably not gonna start all things must pass until tomorrow. i think i like it more than all but one beatles albums haha
Wah Wah is not far off of my favorite song ever brings me no pleasure to love eric clapton’s playing so much
listening to Dark Horse today, and while it's not his strongest overall (but still a good album), the opening instrumental track is pretty great
all things must pass - about as good as music gets plastic ono band - handful of the songs are pretty much the best of the four's solo songs, but it's a pretty uneven record ram - maybe three or four white-hot gems but similarly unbalanced imagine - maybe hot take it's way better than plastic ono, maybe my second fave of the solo albums
was just thinking about how "Behind That Locked Door" is the best song ever and no-one really talks about it
Both Plastic Ono and Ram are growers for me. Took me some repeat listens before I really fell in love with them.
it’s not the first time i’ve heard plastic ono, far from it. but it’s the first time for ram and i could definitely see that.
Ram is Paul’s best, even if it is a bit uneven. But the lows aren’t even that low, I still find something to like in every song.
Been diving into Lennon's "Lost Weekend" a lot these last few weeks. Some super interesting things from this time period. The short version is that Yoko suggested that they take a break and he start dating and living with May Pang, which he did for 18 months. During this time he produced his first album (Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats) and released Walls and Bridges. Pussy Cats is a really cool album, half of it is pretty great and the other half is kinda drug fueled weird shit. Walls and Bridges is pretty underrated, all 3 of the other Beatles spoke very highly of it at the time and it has aged pretty well. But what I've dug further into this time is the Lennon/McCartney relationship at the time. As many people know, May Pang invited Paul to come jam with John (and Stevie Wonder, Harry Nilsson, more) while they were recoring Pussy Cats. A fair amount of that jam session exists on A Toot and a Snore in '74. Not really musically that impressive, but a worthwhile listen as a time capsule of the last time Lennon & McCartney played together. Lore says that they got along a if no time had passed and nothing had happened. The craziest thing I learned this time around though, is that John was going to fly out with Pang to go see Paul and Linda in New Orleans during the recording of Wings Venus and Mars. A flight was booked and they were going to hang out all weekend. But then, and I can't stress how weird this sounds, Yoko reconciled with John a few days ahead of the flight, after Yoko told John that she had a cure for his smoking habit. Two days later John contacted Pang and told her that their relationship was over and he was going back to Yoko. He never flew out to see Paul and Linda. Later in life, John admitted that his time with Pang was the happiest he had ever been.
This is where chronology fails you. Wild Life was wonderful when I went looking for a relaxed, hommemade record from him like 13 records in. Charming as hell. But when you want him to follow being a Beatle? Not so much.
Ram is incredible. Definitely uneven but the highs are oh so very high. It's the perfect blend of the homemade feeling of Paul's albums around that time with the anthemic style songs that Paul does so well.
