It has a masterclass in production. Can't deny that.

And I can even appreciate that the world's biggest pop band had the balls to put out a musique concrete piece like that, even if I rarely want to listen to it.

I have to disagree here. "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something" are the best produced and performed songs of Harrison's career, even if Paul and John were being dickheads by then.

oh, I fully agree, but I think that's less John and Paul, and more because George Martin stepped back in and took the reins for Abbey Road. a big part of why White Album and Let It Be sound like a garage rock band and Abbey Road is one of the most perfectly produced albums ever hahah

I'll grant you, Abbey Road being the most polished, but you don't think The Beatles sounds good? I LOVE the sound on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and as doofy of a song as "Piggies" is, it sounds great.

I'll grant you Let It Be, as that was the whole purpose of that album, to be a live band again.

Unrelated, but I've always resented the line of thought/line of attack that The Beatles are somehow overrated as a band because they couldn't play live.

They didn't play live, but how can anyone watch the rooftop concert and think they couldn't?

well I don't think it sounds bad but it's definitely a mess in an appealing way. George's songs, particularly "Guitar Gently Weeps" have clearly had hours and hours of work put into them, next to stuff like "I'm So Tired" or "Birthday" or "...Me and My Monkey" etc. which are raw as hell. I can see that that's definitely part of the appeal, but it frustrates me a bit (like the album itself lol). meanwhile Abbey Road and Revolver are just some of the most immacutely produced things I've heard, they're amazing

yeah, but that's not the only track that does, so it doesn't give it a leg up or anything for me. the production thing is what people point to for sgt. pepper's too (even if it's more so for studio as instrument experimentation) and it doesn't make me enjoy the songs i don't like on it more. that being said, i don't *skip* "maxwell's silver hammer". i do think the blemishes or weird decisions are fun to ponder since i think they were usually very deliberate with what they released and i like the juxtaposition of their music being so important with them making decisions that suggest it's just another record to them.

yeah i respect that "revolution 9" exists for the same reason's as above, but it would be blissful to go the rest of my life without hearing it again

Not sure what the general preference is but good lord is the album version of “Let It Be” 100x better than the single version. Harrison’s a great guitarist but that solo is a flaccid nothing while Lennon’s (I think) on the album might be the best in their catalog

For me the solo on the Naked version is the best by far. And yeah the one on the original album is awful, George was not on his game that day. One of many very bizarre choices on the original album lol

The really baffling thing is that the single version keeps exactly ONE guitar lick from the album version on the last verse and none of the awesome continuation into the chorus.

Just read through this thread, which was fun! “Here, There, and Everywhere” is one of my favorite Beatles songs and songs of all time period.

that song is perfect, and Paul never really wrote anything that harmonically crazy again unfortunately

The shift from a minor triad to a major triad on the words “never care” to “everywhere” gets me every time.

The fact that it's on the same album that he wrote "For No One" and "Eleanor Rigby" is fuckin' witchcraft.

I really hope we get a new Revolver remix/remaster. It’s insane how great that album is.

Finally been getting around to spending more significant time with McCartney 1 and Tug of War. That Would Be Something is definitely on my short list for favorite post-Beatles Paul songs. Whole album is pretty enjoyable really. Of course I wouldn't put it against the best of the Beatles or anything, but it's a rock solid solo debut.

I love that I will probably continue to discover new Beatles/Beatles adjacent material my whole life.

    Yes!

It gets underrated because of its relative simplicity, but Jesus it’s just wall-to-wall with perfect pop music.

With you all the way. It just feels great. Another reminder why people who say Ringo wasn't a good drummer are just wrong - bands that feel that good, album after album, haven't done it by sheer luck.

People who don’t think Ringo was good get way too hung up on technical skill. He’s one of the great song-focused drummers. He’s basically a melody instrument on “A Day in the Life” and I firmly believe he invented modern rock drumming on “Ticket to Ride”
